Finding what you want
For books and journals, search SAULCAT, our online library
catalogue: it lists material held in the Main Library and most of
the outlying libraries. Once you’ve found what you want, note the
classmark (the code we use to organise items). You can nd the
classmark on the spine of each item (e.g. BF319.F8). Most books
can be found on Level 3, arranged by their classmark. Journals can
be found on Level 4, also arranged by their classmark. There are
some book collections on Level 4: check the oor directories.
Books and journals dated 1900 or earlier, rare books,
photographs, archive and manuscript material are available for
loan or consultation from the Special Collections department
on the North Haugh. Contact Special Collections to arrange an
appointment: speccoll@st-andrews.ac.uk
Electronic resources
The Library oers access to a large number of electronic
resources. A wide range of specialised subject databases can be
found on our web pages: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/library. We also
have thousands of electronic journals, and a growing number
of e-books. These can all be found in SAULCAT and on SEEKER
(SEEKER searches across our online resources). If you need help
searching any electronic resources please ask a member of sta
or email library@st-andrews.ac.uk
Self-Service
Once you’ve found the books or items you need, you can borrow
them using the self-service machines on each level. Items can be
returned using the returns machine on Level 2. When the Library
is closed, you can return items by posting them through the book
drop outside.
Lost your ID card?
Please let the Library know. Apply and pay for a new card via the
Current Students page on the University website:
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/tech/idcards
Can’t nd a book?
Please speak to a member of Library sta or ask at the Helpdesk.
If the item you want is on loan to someone else?
Most books (except Short Loan books) can be recalled if they are
on loan. Find the book in SAULCAT and click on the Recall button
at the top of the page. Please allow 7 days for the book to be
recalled.
If the item is not in the Main Library?
Books and items for some subjects may be located in one of our
outlying libraries, e.g. St Mary’s, J. F. Allen. Please visit that library
to borrow items. If the item is located in our Library Store, you
can recall it. For details see:
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/library/services/borrowing/librarystore/.
Short loan collection
Material in heavy demand is placed in the self-service Short Loan
area on Level 2 near the Helpdesk. To nd out which items are on
Short Loan you can either browse the shelves or check SAULCAT.
