A nice unexpected meeting at the University Abdelamek Essaaidi As in every year, the association of the students of the National School of AppliedSciences of Tangiers (NSAST- Morocco) organized the 3 rd edition of NSAST Forum during the 4 th and the 5 th of April 2006. I was one of the members of its Organizing Committee. To begin with, we had to look for official, cultural, media, and scientific sponsors. This was done within the framework of the Morocco e-Week 2006 activities which our branch ( Abdelmalek Essadi University IEEE Student Branch) coorganized. And during our meeting with the IEEE Morocco Section Chair, Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi, we proposed that the IEEE Morocco section could be our Scientific / Technical sponsor and he accepted. One of the suggestions is to invite Mr Mohamed Aboud, IEEE Egypt Graduate Of the Last Decade Affinity Group (GOLD) Chair, to give a talk about the Egyptian experience about linking university directly to industry since it was related to our forum’s subject which was: “ Engineering Jobs in the Service of the National Economy Emergence”. Mr Mohamed Aboud & Mounir Berberi On the first day of the forum, I w a s introduced to Mr Abboud by Mr Essaaidi. As the Section’s Chair had some work to do that day, I stayed with Mr Aboud, and most of the day we talked and exchanged ideas about the IEEE. Believe me, it was a really fruitful discussion and I began to understand the real importance off the IEEE networking. We talked about everything, including the Egyptian Engineering Day, as well as some courses about planning and the “seven habits” of Dr Stephan Covey. We also talked about the Moroccan and Egyptian cultural backgrounds. This meeting with Mr Aboud was really memorable. I have learned a lot about how to make the most of the IEEE, as well as how to work as a team and how to be well organized in general. I wish to meet more and more IEEE members from all over the world to broaden my knowledge even more. Thank you Mr Aboud for your contribution to the NSAS Forum and for the nice meeting I had with you. IEEE MVU Student Branch officially launched, and begin with a Workshop activity Imade BENELALLAM, imade.benelallam@ieee.org MV University Rabat hosted an event that officially launched the IEEE Student Branch. More than 20 members of the student branch took part in the elections of the Students Barnch Executive Committee. Now approved by IEEE, our student branch will organize our first event for its members and for all research students in Morocco. The 1st Scientific workshop of Information and Communication Technology (JOSTIC'07 “La 1ère Journée Scientifique de la Technologie de l'Information et de la Communication 2007” in French), will be held during the Morocco e-Week 2007 by the Association of the Researchers in Technologies of Information (ACTIF “l'Association des Chercheurs en Technologies de l'InFormation” in French), IEEE MVU Student Branch, and LIMIARF Laboratory. This workshop will be an opportunity to exchange experiences/ideas between the researchers from both Moroccan universities and the industry. The main goals of this workshop are to build a communication bridge between all IEEE student branches in Morocco. Study platform will be concerned with the following topics: • Artificial Intelligence. • Image and Signal processing. • Processing of natural languages. • Networks and telecommunication. Two Moroccan Teams received The « Honorable Mention Award » from the IEEE Computer Society CHC60 Website Competition Within the framework of the IEEE Computer Society's 60th Anniversary History Competition CHC60, twoTeams from Moroccan Universities have taken part in this event. These Teams belong to Faculty of Science of Tetuan (Mentor: Prof. Mohammad Essaaidi) and Faculty of Science Dhar Mahraz of Fez (Mentor: Prof. Mohammed El Mohajir). The two teams received the « Honorable Mention Award » for their participation in this international competition. A ceremony will be organized by the IEEE Morocco Section to hand over the awards to the winners. Page 6 IEEE MS Newsletter
Workshop on MPEG Technologies Saturday January 20, 2007 Marrakech - Morocco The Moroccan Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a working group of ISO/IEC in charge of the development of standards for coded representation of digital audio and video. Established in 1988, the group has produced: MPEG-1, the standard on which such products as Video CD and MP3 are based, MPEG-2, the standard on which such products as digital television set top boxes and DVD are based, MPEG-4, the standard for multimedia for the fixed and mobile web, MPEG-7, the standard for description and search of audio and visual content, MPEG-21, the Multimedia Framework. MPEG has started a number of new standard lines: MPEG-A "Multimedia Application Format" providing application-specific standards by integrating multiple MPEG technologies. MPEG-B, MPEG-C and MPEG-D providing Systems, Video and Audio specific standards, respectively, and MPEG-E "MPEG Multimedia Middleware" is the latest standard under development that will support download and execution of multimedia applications. In its 18 years of activity MPEG has developed an impressive portfolio of technologies that have created an industry worth several hundreds billion USD. In a world where information technology, consumer electronics and telecommunication products converge by incorporating increasingly sophisticated technologies and the need for timely available standards is as strong as ever, MPEG provides a proven mechanism to feed research results into standards that promote industry innovation to the benefit of all. MPEG is a committee of ISO/IEC that is open to experts duly accredited by an appropriate National Standards Body. MPEG usually holds four meetings a year. These comprise plenary meetings and subgroup meetings on Requirements, Systems, Multimedia Description Schemes, Video, Audio, 3D Graphics Compression, Test, Implementation, and Liaison. On average MPEG meetings are attended by over 300 experts representing more than 200 companies spanning all industry domains with a stake in digital audio, video and multimedia. On average more than 20 countries are represented at a meeting. Ecole Mohammadia d'Ingénieurs will be organizing a workshop on MPEG technologies on Saturday 20 th January, 2007. This workshop is organised on the side of the 79 th MPEG meeting which will be held in Marrakech, January 15-19, 2007. The workshop on MPEG Technologies is designed to cover the recent trends in MPEG. It intends to give an overview to the local Moroccan scientific community (engineers, industrialists, and academics) on the last MPEG state of the art advancement, in the presence of MPEG experts that can share their insight and expertise on MPEG. It is also its objective to give an opportunity to local speakers, from industry and academy, to present different Multimedia works and projects closely related to the MPEG technologies. The workshop will take place in Ecole Nationale des Sciences Appliqués in Marrakech. SBC2006 By Salima Kaissi, IEEE MS Students Branches Coordinator, ksali@gmail.com After Germany, this year, it was France that organized the joint Student Branch (SB) and Graduates Of the Last Decade (GOLD) Congress. This big event was held from August 31 st to September 3 rd 2006 at Pierre & Marie Curie University in Paris VI, France. For the first time, our country was represented by the Morocco Section Chair, Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi and the Student Branches Coordinator, Ms Salima Kaissi. More than 250 participants came from different countries of IEEE Region 8 to Paris to attend this Congress. This meeting was an opportunity to meet student branches and GOLD chairs and also important figures of IEEE and IEEE Region 8. It was also a chance to discuss various topics and exchange ideas. The program of the Congress was very interesting. There were seminars about the IEEE, its advantages, how to manage the IEEE student branch and several other topics. The SBC 2006 was also the beginning of a cooperation relationship between Spanish student branches and Morocco student branches. The Spanish students invited some students from our country to attend their National Student Branch Congress that was held in Zaragoza from the 16 th to the 19 th of November 2006. This event allowed our students to get an idea about the organization of events like these, especially since the IEEE Morocco student Branches are thinking about organizing the same kind of event in our country.
