The 2012 Motocross World Championship season fired into life at
a wet and windy Valkenswaard on April 9, when Gautier Paulin led
the Dunlop challenge with an impressive fourth overall on his Mx1
class debut.
The young Kawasaki Racing rider held second in the opening moto
before small errors left him fourth at the flag. The Frenchman then
suffered an early crash in moto two, before charging through the deep
sand from 30th position to seventh and the brink of an overall podium.
Paulin said: “unfortunately I made two mistakes in the first race and
had to settle for 4th. In the second race I kept charging to the last lap
to prove what I can do.”
Honda World Motocross competitor Rui Gonçalves made it two
Dunlop riders in the top seven with 10-4 finishes.
nursing an injured hand before the first moto, team-mate and
2011 GP winner Evgeny Bobryshev then sustained numerous upper
body injuries in a crash. A brave Bobryshev returned to take twelfth
in moto two.
Bobryshev explained: “I wanted to cry because of the pain, but
maybe these nine points will help me in the championship.”
Paulin’s team-mate xavier Boog and new LS Honda signing
Jonathan Barragán finished tenth and 15th overall respectively.
Dunlop tyres have already adorned a 2012 Champion, after
Team Volvo Group Suzuki/Triple R Racing Suzuki’s Robert
Bugden clinched a record fourth new Zealand Superbike
Championship at the final round in Taupo on March 27.
The 31-year-old Queenslander entered the final round with a
10.5-point advantage over fellow Suzuki rider and local favourite
Andrew Stroud, with victory at Taupo enough to seal him the title
by 37.5 points after five hard-fought rounds.
After claiming victory at the final round of the season with a
perfect weekend of back-to-back wins, Bugden added the 2012
championship to the three consecutive titles that he won in
2007-2009 aboard the all-conquering Suzuki GSx-R1000.
“It’s been a pretty long couple of months for a five-round series
and we have had our ups and downs, but to get the
championship under our belt is a good effort and great feeling,”
said Budgen. “I have to say a huge thanks to the whole Volvo
Group Triple R Suzuki team; they’ve been burning the midnight
oil to make this happen and I truly appreciate it.”
