One such was the Technology+Design
debate that took place on the opening
day, which brought together more than
75 participants. Chaired by Gianluca
Fenucci, managing director of ISA
Yachts, the discussions focused on the
need for the yachting industry to pool
its resources and know-how. “Synergy
is the principle opportunity we have
for overcoming the effects of the crisis
and increasing competitiveness,”
commented Fenucci, who is also
president of the Marchigiano Naval
Consortium (CNM), the event organisers.
The question of open debate was
continued in a conference organised
in conjunction with the prize-giving
ceremony for the winners of the Targa
Bonetto on the design of onboard
living spaces with specific focus on
ergonomics. The need for discussion
on the trends and solutions offered
by designers, was emphasised by
Marco Bonetto, who conceived the
award in honour of his father Rodolfo,
a leading figure in the history of
international design. Roberto Franzoni,
a former journalist and captain and
presently marketing director for
Sanlorenzo, emphasised the need
for builders to research into ways of
channelling resources into improving

SEATEC in Carrara, Tuscany, in February was
held in conjunction with Compotec, the third
international exhibition for composites and
related technologies. Some 780 brands were
present (including 269 from overseas) and
visitor numbers were up five per cent on last
year. In addition to the regular design events
such as the Millennium Design Awards (MYDA)
and the Targa Rodolfo Bonetto, there was a
varied programme of symposia dealing with
technical themes.

Living standards achieved through
systematic study of onboard space
was the topic dealt with by Professor
Simon Mastrangelo of Ergoproject, a
consultancy firm that researches the
ergonomic issues associated with the
production and development of a wide
range of products, including yachts. He
reminded the audience that design is
not just conditioned by the amount of
space available, but must also take into
consideration other parameters that
designers in the car industry have been
aware of for some time.
Talking of the automobile industry,
Lamborghini hosted a presentation of
its Forged Composite technology, the
method of monocoque carbon fibre
construction utilised in the construction
of its Sesto Elemento supercar
presented at last year’s Paris Auto
Show. The composite material features
an incredibly high threshold with just
one-third the density of titanium, but
greater load-carrying capacity (we hope
to bring our readers further insight into
this new technology and its relevance
to the yachting industry in a future issue
of SYD).
