Letter From The President<br />

Dear Friends:<br />

Ah… spring! It’s a time <strong>of</strong> renewal and rejuvenation, a time when each <strong>of</strong><br />

us contemplates another winter’s passing and the promise <strong>of</strong> bright days<br />

ahead. It’s a time to plan, to feel, to believe…to make things happen.<br />

At the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>, it’s also a time to<br />

celebrate our donors, without whom our good work would go undone, our<br />

communities unserved. Like a nurturing Mother Nature in spring, inspiring<br />

flourishing growth, our donors plant the seeds that inspire our communities<br />

to work, to serve, to grow.<br />

This causal relationship is central to how the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> works.<br />

It is a potent formula: Caring, committed citizens utilizing <strong>Foundation</strong><br />

resources and expertise to effect genuine change. Without it, we stagnate;<br />

with it, we thrive.<br />

Our <strong>2006</strong> <strong>Donor</strong> <strong>Report</strong> honors these committed people, companies and<br />

organizations who generously supported our communities through gifts<br />

to the <strong>Foundation</strong>. Sprinkled throughout are vignettes about some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

newer members <strong>of</strong> our <strong>Foundation</strong> Family <strong>of</strong> Funds, and the special story<br />

that each brings with them to the rich tapestry <strong>of</strong> community history<br />

and values we have been entrusted to steward for generations to come.<br />

Our <strong>Foundation</strong><br />

The <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> connects<br />

donors who care with causes that matter in Berlin, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>,<br />

Plainville and Southington. We do this by raising resources and<br />

developing partnerships that make a measurable improvement<br />

in the quality <strong>of</strong> life in each <strong>of</strong> these communities.<br />

This good work does not happen without the enormous<br />

generosity <strong>of</strong> our donors, the thousands <strong>of</strong> caring individuals,<br />

families, businesses, agencies and organizations who know<br />

that a community is defined not only by the people who<br />

live and work in it, but by those who care about making it a<br />

better place.<br />

In <strong>2006</strong>, our communities’ tradition <strong>of</strong> caring and commitment<br />

continued yet again, with donors displaying extraordinary<br />

philanthropy. It is this vision and dedication that keep our<br />

communities strong and make our future bright.<br />

Our Funds<br />

The more than 140 funds <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Greater</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> are the instruments by which we do our<br />

work. In <strong>2006</strong>, six new funds were added to our Family <strong>of</strong><br />

Funds to serve interests and needs ranging from academic<br />

enrichment to support for victims <strong>of</strong> domestic violence.<br />

It’s easy to make a difference by supporting the <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong>. <strong>Donor</strong>s may contribute directly to an existing<br />

fund, or establish a fund <strong>of</strong> their own. Funds can be established<br />

by individuals, families, businesses or organizations in<br />

a wide variety <strong>of</strong> ways to meet most any personal interest or<br />

community need.<br />

DISCRETIONARY FUNDS<br />

Unrestricted funds administered at the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s board <strong>of</strong><br />

directors to meet the changing needs <strong>of</strong><br />

the community.<br />

DESIGNATED OR FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS<br />

Funds that support a specific organization<br />

or a field <strong>of</strong> interest that may be close to a<br />

donor’s heart.<br />

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS<br />

Funds that support a donor’s current<br />

interests, with direct participation by the<br />

donor in the grantmaking process. These<br />

funds allow for generational advising,<br />

ensuring a tradition <strong>of</strong> family philanthropy.<br />

SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

Funds directed to students for academic<br />

study and scholastic advancement.<br />

BUILD-A-FUND<br />

Funds that build an endowment over time<br />

to a minimum level prior to distribution.<br />

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP FUNDS<br />

Funds that provide technical assistance in<br />

the form <strong>of</strong> financial and administrative<br />

services for voluntary groups performing<br />

charitable work. Such groups may lack tax<br />

status or the necessary infrastructure to<br />

handle administrative services.<br />

ADMINISTRATIVE ENDOWMENT FUND<br />

Operational fund designed to build the<br />

<strong>Foundation</strong>’s future financial strength.<br />

PARTNERS IN PHILANTHROPY FUND<br />

violence including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency<br />

shelter, individual and group counseling, legal advocacy, a<br />

children’s program and community education. The Center<br />

believes that women are their own best resource, and<br />

works to empower them through support and education.<br />

Scholarship Fund<br />

Kim Miller, a 2003 graduate<br />

<strong>of</strong> Berlin High School, was a<br />

dedicated student athlete and<br />

role model whose swimming<br />

talent, competitive spirit and<br />

grace under pressure inspired<br />

family, friends and teammates<br />

Kim Miller alike. A member <strong>of</strong> her high<br />

school swim squad as well as the Hamden Heronettes<br />

synchronized swim team, Kim was diagnosed with a rare<br />

form <strong>of</strong> bone cancer in 2001. Kim continued to compete,<br />

through years <strong>of</strong> chemotherapy treatments, surgery,<br />

remission and recurrence, into her freshman year at<br />

Millersville University in Pennsylvania, only to lose her long<br />

battle with cancer in 2005 at the tender age <strong>of</strong> 19.<br />

The Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming Scholarship Fund<br />

was established by Heronettes coach Teena Marie Griggs<br />

and synchro coach Krista Bessinger to keep Kim’s memory<br />

alive, while supporting the continuing career <strong>of</strong> a synchronized<br />

swimmer in the East Zone at the collegiate level.<br />

Many donors, including swimmers from throughout the<br />

East Zone, are supporting the fund.<br />

community service, and will attend the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Connecticut. It also will provide “camperships” for<br />

For Georgia Knapp Thomson,<br />

community service was both<br />

duty and privilege. Born and<br />

raised in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>, she<br />

made her life one <strong>of</strong> aiding<br />

others in need. Following<br />

a scholastic career at Wellesley<br />

College and Columbia<br />

Georgia Knapp Thomson<br />

University’s School <strong>of</strong> Business,<br />

as well as four years <strong>of</strong> working in <strong>New</strong> York City, Georgia<br />

came back to her hometown at the start <strong>of</strong> World War II.<br />

She directed the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> the American Red<br />

Cross until war’s end, and volunteered for many years<br />

afterward following disasters throughout the east including<br />

floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Upon her death at<br />

age 92 in <strong>2006</strong>, she was the longest-serving member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong>’s First Church <strong>of</strong> Christ Congregational.<br />

This fund, established by Georgia prior to her death to<br />

benefit the <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Britain</strong> community, will be used<br />

to make grants at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s board<br />

<strong>of</strong> directors.<br />

With America steadily<br />

losing ground to the rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> the world in the fields<br />

<strong>of</strong> science and math,<br />

many states are devising<br />

new strategies to better<br />

equip our students to<br />

compete. But at the local<br />

level, new educational initiatives are <strong>of</strong>ten subject to the<br />

restraints <strong>of</strong> school budgets.<br />

Thanks to a group <strong>of</strong> motivated parents, the Southington<br />

Science and Mathematics Initiative (SSMI) is working with<br />

Southington’s public schools to enrich, enlighten and<br />

engage Southington students.<br />

“SSMI aims to encourage the next generation <strong>of</strong> scientists,<br />

mathematicians and engineers,” says Jill Notar-Francesco,<br />

Parent Representative. “Providing a way for individuals,<br />

companies and others to make tax-deductible contributions<br />

to help the school district just makes sense.”<br />

In <strong>2006</strong>, the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> helped these visionary<br />

parents set up a donor advised fund that <strong>of</strong>fers expert<br />

management and growth potential. A committee designated<br />

by the Initiative directly participates in an annual grantawarding<br />

process. In 2007, more than 140 Southington<br />

students are being sent to CAMPY on Campus, a one-day<br />

program that fuels students' mathematical and analytical<br />

imaginations.<br />
