Letter From The President
Dear Friends:
Ah… spring! It’s a time of renewal and rejuvenation, a time when each of
us contemplates another winter’s passing and the promise of bright days
ahead. It’s a time to plan, to feel, to believe…to make things happen.
At the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, it’s also a time to
celebrate our donors, without whom our good work would go undone, our
communities unserved. Like a nurturing Mother Nature in spring, inspiring
flourishing growth, our donors plant the seeds that inspire our communities
to work, to serve, to grow.
This causal relationship is central to how the Community Foundation works.
It is a potent formula: Caring, committed citizens utilizing Foundation
resources and expertise to effect genuine change. Without it, we stagnate;
with it, we thrive.
Our 2006 Donor Report honors these committed people, companies and
organizations who generously supported our communities through gifts
to the Foundation. Sprinkled throughout are vignettes about some of the
newer members of our Foundation Family of Funds, and the special story
that each brings with them to the rich tapestry of community history
and values we have been entrusted to steward for generations to come.
We thank them – and you – for that trust.
Shortly, we will celebrate yet another change of season with this report’s
companion piece, our 2006 Annual Report. These publications, along with
our rejuvenated website (www.cfgnb.org) and future e-newsletters, are our
way of keeping you informed about the good work of the Community
Foundation…

Our Foundation
The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain connects
donors who care with causes that matter in Berlin, New Britain,
Plainville and Southington. We do this by raising resources and
developing partnerships that make a measurable improvement
in the quality of life in each of these communities.
This good work does not happen without the enormous
generosity of our donors, the thousands of caring individuals,
families, businesses, agencies and organizations who know
that a community is defined not only by the people who
live and work in it, but by those who care about making it a
better place.
In 2006, our communities’ tradition of caring and commitment
continued yet again, with donors displaying extraordinary
philanthropy. It is this vision and dedication that keep our
communities strong and make our future bright.
Our Funds
The more than 140 funds of the Community Foundation of
Greater New Britain are the instruments by which we do our
work. In 2006, six new funds were added to our Family of
Funds to serve interests and needs ranging from academic
enrichment to support for victims of domestic violence.
It’s easy to make a difference by supporting the Community
Foundation. Donors may contribute directly to an existing
fund, or establish a fund of their own. Funds can be established
by individuals, families, businesses or organizations in
a wide variety of ways to meet most any personal interest or
community need.

DISCRETIONARY FUNDS
Unrestricted funds administered at the
discretion of the Foundation’s board of
directors to meet the changing needs of
the community.
DESIGNATED OR FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS
Funds that support a specific organization
or a field of interest that may be close to a
donor’s heart.
DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
Funds that support a donor’s current
interests, with direct participation by the
donor in the grantmaking process. These
funds allow for generational advising,
ensuring a tradition of family philanthropy.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Funds directed to students for academic
study and scholastic advancement.
BUILD-A-FUND
Funds that build an endowment over time
to a minimum level prior to distribution.
FISCAL SPONSORSHIP FUNDS
Funds that provide technical assistance in
the form of financial and administrative
services for voluntary groups performing
charitable work. Such groups may lack tax
status or the necessary infrastructure to
handle administrative services.
ADMINISTRATIVE ENDOWMENT FUND
Operational fund designed to build the
Foundation’s future financial strength.
PARTNERS IN PHILANTHROPY FUND
Annual appeal fund that supports current
Foundation operations.

planning, Brendan Conry,
president and founder of Conry
Asset Management, knows
that a fund established at the
Community Foundation of
Brendan Conry Greater New Britain is a most
effective way to give back to his community. That’s why
he established the Conry Asset Management Charitable
Fund on behalf of his firm, which advises approximately 80
clients with investable assets of more then $150 million.
This donor advised fund will allow Brendan, who serves on
the Foundation’s finance/investments committee, the
opportunity to leave a legacy in the Greater New Britain
area for years to come. Conry Asset Management will
donate a portion of its annual profits to the fund to
provide grants to a variety of worthy causes, including
efforts to eliminate hunger and improve education.

Prudence Crandall Center Fund
For more than 30 years, Prudence Crandall Center has
provided comprehensive services to victims of domestic
violence including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency
shelter, individual and group counseling, legal advocacy, a
children’s program and community education. The Center
believes that women are their own best resource, and
works to empower them through support and education.
This designated fund will serve to assist families who are
victims of domestic violence through ongoing support of
the Center’s programs and services.

Scholarship Fund
Kim Miller, a 2003 graduate
of Berlin High School, was a
dedicated student athlete and
role model whose swimming
talent, competitive spirit and
grace under pressure inspired
family, friends and teammates
Kim Miller alike. A member of her high
school swim squad as well as the Hamden Heronettes
synchronized swim team, Kim was diagnosed with a rare
form of bone cancer in 2001. Kim continued to compete,
through years of chemotherapy treatments, surgery,
remission and recurrence, into her freshman year at
Millersville University in Pennsylvania, only to lose her long
battle with cancer in 2005 at the tender age of 19.
The Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming Scholarship Fund
was established by Heronettes coach Teena Marie Griggs
and synchro coach Krista Bessinger to keep Kim’s memory
alive, while supporting the continuing career of a synchronized
swimmer in the East Zone at the collegiate level.
Many donors, including swimmers from throughout the
East Zone, are supporting the fund.

Southington; these were
among the things that were
closest to the heart of Dennis
Stanek, Sr., a beloved community
leader in Southington who
Dennis J. Stanek
passed away in November,
2005 following a brief illness. This scholarship fund is a
tribute to Dennis’ life and to his love of community. The
fund will provide scholarships to Southington residents
graduating from Southington High School who participate
in varsity sports and/or have significant records of
community service, and will attend the University of
Connecticut. It also will provide “camperships” for
Southington children allowing them to attend the
Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs’ Camp Sloper.

For Georgia Knapp Thomson,
community service was both
duty and privilege. Born and
raised in New Britain, she
made her life one of aiding
others in need. Following
a scholastic career at Wellesley
College and Columbia
Georgia Knapp Thomson
University’s School of Business,
as well as four years of working in New York City, Georgia
came back to her hometown at the start of World War II.
She directed the New Britain chapter of the American Red
Cross until war’s end, and volunteered for many years
afterward following disasters throughout the east including
floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Upon her death at
age 92 in 2006, she was the longest-serving member of
New Britain’s First Church of Christ Congregational.
This fund, established by Georgia prior to her death to
benefit the Greater New Britain community, will be used
to make grants at the discretion of the Foundation’s board
of directors.

Catalyst Fund
Catalyst Fund members share an interest in working cooperatively
on charitable issues of common concern. Members make a
donation of $250 to participate in a series of workshops,
culminating in the selection of a grant recipient organization. The
Foundation would like to offer a special thanks to Webster Bank for
funding a portion of the 2006 Catalyst grant while membership
donations are invested to build a permanent endowment for future
grant making; and to The Stanley Works and Ericson, Scalise &
Mangan, P.C., for sponsoring Catalyst Fund meetings in 2006.

Science and
Mathematics
Initiative Fund
With America steadily
losing ground to the rest
of the world in the fields
of science and math,
many states are devising
new strategies to better
equip our students to
compete. But at the local
level, new educational initiatives are often subject to the
restraints of school budgets.
Thanks to a group of motivated parents, the Southington
Science and Mathematics Initiative (SSMI) is working with
Southington’s public schools to enrich, enlighten and
engage Southington students.
“SSMI aims to encourage the next generation of scientists,
mathematicians and engineers,” says Jill Notar-Francesco,
Parent Representative. “Providing a way for individuals,
companies and others to make tax-deductible contributions
to help the school district just makes sense.”
In 2006, the Community Foundation helped these visionary
parents set up a donor advised fund that offers expert
management and growth potential. A committee designated
by the Initiative directly participates in an annual grantawarding
process. In 2007, more than 140 Southington
students are being sent to CAMPY on Campus, a one-day
program that fuels students' mathematical and analytical
imaginations.
