SPORTS Women find friendship in half-marathon By Sandy Lockhart In six short months, a small group of Muskoka women started running and didn’t stop until they conquered a halfmarathon. Six runners trained through a group at Muskoka Fitness and finished the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half- Marathon on Sunday, Sept. 27. “They all finished with a great time,” says their trainer, Katherine McPhee, obviously proud of the six women who trained with her, explaining the times ranged from 2:02:41 to 2:28:53. A half-marathon is 13.1 miles or just over 21 kilometres. The fastest woman in the half-marathon finished with a time of 1:17:59 In April, Muskoka Fitness offered a learn to run program, and at the conclusion, three of the participants from it joined the 16-week program to train and prepare for a half-marathon. “Everyone finished and everyone had a great experience,” McPhee says, noting the Muskoka group could see they had trained properly and were proud of their success. The six runners, along with McPhee, were Tara Williams, Melissa Imrie and Jane Rawson from the learn to run group, Janean Bell, in her first halfmarathon, Tammy Dyment who ran a few 10-kilometre runs back in high school and Anna DeSellas who has runhalf-marathons before. Two younger runners, 13-year-olds Fleur VanEynde and Victoria Verbeek did not run the half marathon but did participate in the Muskoka Fitness program. “It was amazing,” says Melissa Imrie of Bracebridge who explains the race was much different than their usual training runs. “Our last long run was on Lone Pine Drive and then we went to this run with 18,000 people.” She joined the learn to run group in April and hasn’t looked back. “I jogged a bit in college but I’d just come off a mat leave and was pretty inactive.” Imrie explains that joining the halfmarathon group was a great motivator. “I knew that I probably wouldn’t go further than 5-k without the group,” she says. They ran together on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and did a fourth run on their own each week. By the end, it was only females and the group grew very close. Anna DeSellas of Port Sydney joined the half-marathon group 16 weeks ago for the social aspect. “I didn’t want to run alone anymore,” she says. “I was running alone on rural roads.” After living here for three years, she had not yet met anyone to run with. The Scotiabank half-marathon was not her first “but it was the first that I trained properly for,” she says. “It was a much better experience. It was great training with a group of friendly women.” DeSellas says the running camaraderie, or running bond with these women is very strong. “You run with these people for a couple of hours every week,” DeSellas. “We talk as we run. We became very close.” She says that even through the formal running clinic with Muskoka Fitness is over, they will continue to run together regularly. “This race – it is one of the coolest things I’ve done since I moved here.
