and arts patrons. Claude Howell’s Apartment<br />

44 at the <strong>Carolina</strong> Apartments became<br />

the sought after place for idea exchange and<br />

networking among artists, freethinkers, and<br />

community leaders.<br />

Throughout its history, Cameron Art<br />

Museum has been honored as steward of<br />

generous gifts of art from private collectors.<br />

The exhibition, The Transformative Power<br />

of Friendship, tells the story of two gifts<br />

Barton College in Wilson, <strong>NC</strong>, will<br />

present the 31st Eastern / Central North<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition,<br />

on view in the Barton Art Galleries,<br />

located in the Case Art Building, from<br />

Feb. 3 - 22, 2013. A reception and awards<br />

ceremony will be held on Feb. 3, starting<br />

at 1:30pm.<br />

Since 1979, Barton College has hosted<br />

the Awards for the largest regional district<br />

in the state, currently with 62 counties<br />

from Winston-Salem to the Coast. The<br />

College is fortunate to be associated with<br />

The Wilson Daily Times, which provides<br />

financial support for the Scholastic Art<br />

Awards program.<br />

The Awards provide the opportunity for<br />

teenagers to have their work exhibited in<br />

prestigious galleries. Barton College, as a<br />

regional affiliate hosts the work of eastern<br />

North <strong>Carolina</strong> award winners, each January.<br />

Gold Medals and American Visions Medals<br />

are included in the national exhibition<br />

to be held in New York City.<br />

More than $3.25 million in scholarships<br />

are available to graduating seniors<br />

who earn national medals through the<br />

Alliance Scholarship Provider Network.<br />

Twelve Portfolio Gold Medalists earn<br />

$10,000 scholarships from the Alliance.<br />

Select regions also offer cash awards,<br />

grants and other incentives. The Association<br />

of Independent Colleges of Art and<br />

Design, a consortium of leading art and<br />

design colleges in the US, recognizes The<br />

Scholastic Art Awards as an effective way<br />

for students interested in art and design to<br />

develop successful portfolios for college<br />

admission.<br />

Frank Stick Memorial Exhibition<br />

The Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery<br />

in Nags Head, <strong>NC</strong>, is presenting the 35th<br />

Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show,<br />

on view through Feb. 22, 2013.<br />

Started in 1978 by Dare County <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Council, the Frank Stick Memorial Art<br />

Show is the longest running visual art<br />

exhibition in the county and includes a<br />

wide variety of local fine art ranging from<br />

conceptual to realistic.<br />

Over $1,500 in cash awards will be<br />

offered, including Best in Show, Excellence,<br />

and Honorable Mention. A People’s<br />

Choice award winner will be selected by<br />

public ballot during the opening reception.<br />

All other cash award winners will<br />

be selected by the judges based solely on<br />

merit. The 2013 judges are Sarah Searcy<br />

and Amanda Nicholas.<br />

“It is an honor to be selected as a judge<br />

for this long running art show. I look forward<br />

to seeing the amazing talent of the<br />

Outer Banks,” said Amanda Nicholas.<br />

student entry.<br />
