Former Real Madrid and netherlands
coach leo beenhakker was appointed
sporting director of Hungarian
First Division club Ujpest. the
68-year-old has also coached the
national teams of Poland, trinidad
& tobago and Saudi Arabia, plus
European clubs including Ajax
Amsterdam and Feyenoord and
Mexican sides Guadalajara and
America.
America’s robert Kendrick
has been banned from
tennis for 12 months
after testing positive for a
banned substance at the
French Open earlier this
year. the 31-year-old was
tested in Paris in May and
his sample revealed traces
of the banned stimulant
methylhexaneamine.
Domenech agrees
to €1m settlement
fORMER coach raymond
Domenech, sacked for
misconduct after the
2010 world cup, has
agreed for a €1m
settlement from
the French Football
Federation (FFF).
the agreement
with FFF President
noel Le Graet still
needs to be ratified by its
executive committee at a meeting
in Paris on thursday, but it appears
likely they will rubber-stamp it in
aRGEntInA appointed
alejandro sabella as national
team coach to replace sacked
Sergio Batista, the federation’s
General Secretary Jose Luis Meiszner
announced.
Argentina’s copa America
quarterfinal exit to Uruguay
recently cost Batista his job
even though he had
only replaced Diego
Maradona just eight
months earlier.
Batista was vilified
in the Press for not
seeming to know his
best team — he chopped
order to stop the case going to an
employment tribunal.
Domenech had claimed
€2.9m in compensation
while the FFF has been
seeking to reclaim
world cup bonuses
that Domenech
refuses to return.
Domenech led
France to a runnersup
finish at the ’06 world
cup in Germany, but the rest of
his tenure, which began in ’04,
became synonymous with failure.
sabella succeeds batista
and changed after a poor start before
carlos tevez, whom he dropped after
two games, returned to miss the
decisive spot-kick against Uruguay.
As a player, Sabella had brief stints
with Sheffield United and Leeds. the
56-year-old who began his playing
career with River Plate in his home
city of Buenos Aires, won
the copa Libertadores
with Estudiantes two
years ago.
that success was
instrumental in
pushing him to the
front of the queue to
replace Batista.
Belgian philippe Gilbert won
the San Sebastian classic cycling
event with a devastating late lone
attack. As the sunshine glittered
off the red, black and gold of his
national champion’s jersey, the
Omega Pharma-Lotto rider even
had time to salute the crowds
before he claimed his 14th win of
the season.
Paraguay’s football coach
Gerardo Martino, who
guided his team to the last
eight at the 2010 world cup
and the ’11 copa America
final, resigned last week. He
will be replaced by former
Paraguay defender Francisco
Arce who won more than 60
caps between 1995 and 2004.
Klinsmann named
us coach
fORMER Germany world cup winner and
manager Juergen Klinsmann was named
United States coach last week.
Klinsmann, who took over one day after Bob
Bradley was sacked, became the first foreignborn
coach to lead the US since Serbia’s Bora
Milutinovic, who was in charge from 1991 to ’95.
“we’re excited to have Juergen as the head
coach. Juergen has had success in different areas
of the game and we look forward to the leadership
he’ll provide on and off the field,” said US Soccer
President Sunil Gulati.
Klinsmann brings with him a rich resume as
both a player and manager.
He helped Germany to world cup victory as
a player in ’90 and as coach guided them to
the semifinal in 2006 when they hosted the
tournament. Klinsmann was one of the game’s top
strikers and enjoyed a 17-year career that included
stints in four major European Leagues and top
clubs, including Inter Milan, tottenham Hotspur
and Bayern Munich.
