‘Summer Swing’ Dance at MCC
McLean Community Center gets
into the dance business.
By Clare Kiley
MCC Deputy Director
The interest in ballroom
dancing, swing, salsa,
mambo, etc. has grown
dramatically in recent
years, fueled, to some extent, by
popular shows like “Dancing with
the Stars”. This growing number of
enthusiasts is faced with the issue
of finding the place to practice their
dance skills. For years, area residents
have made the arduous trek
The McLean Community Center,
for years a focal point of the community,
is getting into the dance
business and offering the first of
what is hoped to be many community
dances for local residents. The
first of these is a “Summer Swing”
dance on Friday, June 5 in the
Center’s community hall, the
Center’s largest room and home to
FRIDAY/MAY 22
A Prairie Home Companion with
a variety of ballroom dance classes.
MCC Executive Director Julie
Rasmussen, on board for just nine
months, hopes that the “Summer
Swing” dance will be the first of
many community dances held at
the Center. “With its high ceilings
and sprung wood floor, the community
hall is ideal for dancing,”
Rasmussen said. “There is a shortage
of large rooms like the one we
have here, and the demand for
dance space is increasing. We’d like
to help the community take full
advantage of this wonderful resource
that’s right in their own
neighborhood.”
The event will feature live music
from the 18-piece Loudoun Jazz
preceding the dance. No partners
Director, Margaret Shea said
the dance will provide an enjoyable
evening for teens and adults. “Formal
dancing has become increasingly
popular and many young
adults want to learn the samba and
other ballroom dances they see on
television. This is an opportunity
