This issue of The Gift of
Health pays special tribute to
many who have made gifts in
support of the SJMHS Renewal
Campaign for St. Joe’s Ann
Arbor, Livingston and Saline,
which began in 2002 and will
be completed in 2011. Gifts from
community members, businesses,
foundations, physicians and
staff have helped us to reach
more than $67 million toward
the Campaign so far. This is
our way of saying thanks to
those who have helped us to
reach this point as we continue
to move forward on our road
to renewal – Thank you!
Ferrantino Family Foundation Gift
– the latest to name a space in the new St. Joe’s
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor recently received a gift from long-time supporter
the Ferrantino Family Foundation. This monumental gift, in support of St. Joe’s Renewal
Campaign, will be recognized with the naming of a unit in the new East Tower: 3 East, The
Ferrantino Family Pediatrics and Women’s Surgery Unit.
“As parents, my wife, sisters and I know how important it is to have great health care
for your children,” said Mike Ferrantino. “St. Joe’s is our hospital, we have received
excellent care and we want to help the Hospital give that same level of care to other
families. We hope that our gift will help families and kids go home from the Pediatric
Unit happy and healthy.”
For more than a decade, the Ferrantino Family Foundation and individual members of
the family have supported St. Joe’s with the majority of their gifts aiding health care
services and facility improvements to benefi t some of St. Joe’s youngest patients,
including gifts for the Interactive Health Exploration Station at the St. Joseph Mercy
Canton Health Center and the original Pediatric Playroom in the former Peds Unit at
St. Joe’s Ann Arbor.
The Foundation’s most
recent gift supports
components of the
Patient Towers project
– the pediatric
inpatient unit and
purchase of specialized
equipment for that
unit. In addition, a
portion of their gift
will aid improvement
projects at the Health
System’s Huron Woods
residential facility for The Ferrantino Family Foundation’s gift will help to make a remarkable care
experience for children on the Pediatric Unit. (Above), a young patient enjoying the
seniors who have
fi sh tank on the unit.
Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
“The Ferrantinos’ gift is not only incredibly generous, but it comes at time when support at this
level will be especially inspiring to others,” said Camille B. Shy, SJMHS Vice President for
Development. “We are truly grateful for their ongoing support.”
Ferrantino Family Foundation Gifts – The latest to name a space in the new St. Joe’s (Continued from Cover)
The Ferrantino family joins others who have made leadership-level gifts in support of the Renewal Campaign and who
were recognized with the naming of either the facility they supported or a prominent area within the facility:
• Longtime Manchester residents and donors to the elderly care program at SJMH, James and Virginia Hendley were the
benefactors of a $4.5 million bequest to the Hospital, the largest in the Hospital’s history. Of that gift, $1 million was
earmarked for the Patient Towers project. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit on 4 East was named in
memory of the Hendleys.
• The Helen and Marion S. DeWeese, MD, Surgery Pavilion was named by Dudley and Dawn Holmes and their
children Heather, Kevin and Scott. Mrs. Holmes’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. DeWeese, shared a love of Ann Arbor,
dedication to the advancement of surgical care and commitment to St. Joe’s. This gift in memory of Dr. DeWeese and
honor of Mrs. DeWeese recognizes a commitment that spans generations and pays tribute to the legacy that the couple
built together.
• The Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation made a pledge of $1.5 million. In recognition of this gift, the
medicine unit on 9 East carries the Towsley name, which also graces the Hospital’s Senior Health Building and Breast
Care Services at the Women’s Health Center. Each of these namings serves to honor the Towsleys and is a reminder of
the generosity and dedication that the couple showed St. Joe’s during their lifetime.
• The naming of the Warren R. and Lauraine A. Hoensheid Cancer Center at Woodland recognizes Mrs. Hoensheid’s gifts
made in memory of her husband to support the first facility of its kind in Livingston County. To date, Mrs. Hoensheid’s
gifts have surpassed $1 million to help build the Cancer Center and provide patients in the area with access to state-of-
the-art treatments, innovative services, compassionate care and new hope.
• Pulte Homes, Inc. named the Infusion Clinic in the Hoensheid Cancer Center. The company’s gift of $1 million helped
to build a larger clinic that has a healing atmosphere for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The new clinic helps
to meet patients’ needs for treatment close to home.
• The new medical intensive care and medicine unit on 10 East has been named in memory of Dr. Shankar
Palaniappan, a dedicated medical resident with a promising future in internal medicine who died suddenly in the fall
of 2005. His parents, Dr. Ramanathan and Mrs. Vasantha Palaniappan made their gift of $1 million with the hope
that the residents, nurses and physicians at SJMH who worked with Shankar will remember their son fondly.
• Dedicated supporters Robert and Ellen Thompson (for whom the Women’s Health Center at St. Joe’s in Ann Arbor
is named) have made a pledge of $1.5 million to the Renewal Campaign. In keeping with Mr. and Mrs. Thompson’s
dedication to improving women’s health within the community, the couple’s gift was earmarked for the
development and implementation of the digital mammography program at St. Joe’s Ann Arbor. Naming options
are currently being considered.
For more information about recognition opportunities, please call Steve Levicki, SJMHS Director of Donor Relations, at
Renewal Campaign Status
The Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Renewal Campaign, the largest fund-raising campaign in the history of the Health
System, was launched in 2002 and will be complete in 2011 – the same year SJMHS celebrates 100 years of serving the
community. To date, contributions to the Campaign total nearly $67 million. Campaign leaders include SJMHS Development
Council Chair Bill Holmes and SJMH Major Gifts Committee Co-chairs Bryan Amann and Walter M. Whitehouse, Jr., M.D.
Gifts have benefited several key projects supported by the Campaign including the construction of the Patient Towers
and DeWeese Surgery Pavilion at St. Joe’s in Ann Arbor, the addition of
the Community Health Pavilion at St. Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital and
the creation of the Warren R. and Lauraine A. Hoensheid Cancer Center
at the Woodland Health Center in Brighton.
Community Health Pavilion at St. Joseph Mercy Saline
With the final steel beam being laid this past spring, construction crews
have completed the placement of structural steel – the bones of the
Hospital’s new addition. Roofing and enclosing the building and then
completing the interior walls and finishes will be the focus of construction
activity as the summer concludes.
Once it opens later this fall, the Community Health Pavilion will serve as the new “front door” to the Hospital and as a gateway to all
the services that SJMHS has to offer. The new facility will provide direct access
to expanded imaging and laboratory services, and will feature a new pharmacy,
gift shop, visitor seating area and a 145-seat community room for meetings,
lectures and community events.
North Tower and Chapel at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor
Interior work (drywall, painting, flooring and cabinet and fixture installation)
continued throughout the North Tower’s seven floors over the summer. One
standout is the work being done on 1 North, the first floor of the new facility that
will house enhanced consumer services for visitors, patients and staff.
When the North Tower is complete in May 2010, our guests will enjoy shopping in
a new and expanded hospital gift shop and pharmacy, and relaxing with a beverage or snack in a
bigger Joe’s Java coffee shop. New services will include a salon/spa and, opening in 2011, a full-
service florist.
Hoensheid Cancer Center
With construction completed in 2006, the Hoensheid Cancer Center provides new hope for
hundreds of cancer patients each year. The facility remains the only one of its kind in Livingston
County to house a CT simulator and linear accelerator - essential pieces of equipment for today’s
radiation treatment planning and therapy. Community support, not only helped to build this state-
of-the-art facility and purchase advanced equipment, it has also aided in developing a leading-edge
research program, providing support and education, and offering relief services to uninsured and
underinsured patients.
2009 marks the celebration of two anniversaries for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System – 60 years for the
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Medical Auxiliary in Ann Arbor and 50 years for the St. Joseph Mercy Saline
Hospital Auxiliary.
Teams of dedicated volunteers, the Auxiliaries have each had hundreds of members throughout the years.
Together, these committed individuals have helped to raise funds and provide volunteer services in the
names of the two Hospitals.
Over the years, the Auxiliaries’ funds have been raised through proceeds from the Hospitals’ gift shops; special
events such as golf outings, bowling tournaments and luncheons; and a variety of special “day sales” that are
patronized by the Hospitals’ physicians, staff and visitors, and offer merchandise such as crafts, jewelry, leather
goods, books and holiday poinsettias.
Since 2002, the SJMH Medical Auxiliary’s efforts have supported the Renewal Campaign with gifts totaling
more than $978,000 to benefit the Patient Towers project in Ann Arbor, a variety of services and programs for
at-risk patients who lack insurance or financial means, and the Auxiliary Endowment fund that will help to
carry their mission forward in perpetuity.
The St. Joe’s Saline Auxiliary’s giving has reached more than $115,000 in support of the Hospital’s Renewal
Campaign projects, including the purchase of advanced imaging equipment and the construction of the Imaging
Center and Community Health Pavilion.

2009 St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Golf Classic
This year, golfers generously supported services for uninsured and underinsured
patients at the Hoensheid Cancer Center in Brighton. Chaired by Sandy
Radtke-Gerkin, a committee of volunteers secured sponsorships and gifts
totaling more than $30,000 from Livingston County donors. Players took to
The Gift of Health
2009 St. Joe’s Pro Am Golf Classic
With generous support from sponsors and volunteers, the 2009 St. Joe’s Pro
Am Golf Classic raised more than $126,000. The event, chaired by Bill
Broucek, Jr., was held on June 17 at Pheasant Run Golf Club in Canton.
Nearly 170 players joined 42 Michigan PGA Professionals for this successful
Pro Am that benefited the St. Joseph Mercy Canton Center for Advanced
Medicine and Surgery project scheduled for completion this fall.
Several celebrity friends joined the teams for a day of golf, including Ted
Linsdsay, Pro Am chair emeritus and a former player for both the Detroit
Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks; former Detroit Red Wings player
and assistant coach Joe Kocur; Jeff Lesson host of “Lesson on Golf” from
WWJ Newsradio 950 and “The Ticket” on 97.1 FM; and Anaheim Ducks
defenseman James Wisniewski.
“This was an inspiring year – despite the economic downturn and the
rain, the number of players surpassed that of last year’s event. And,
everyone who came out had a good time, showing a lot of enthusiasm and
sportsmanship,” said 2008/2009 Pro Am Chair Bill Broucek. “I’m grateful
to the dedicated Golf Committee and the generous sponsors.”
Bill Broucek and SJMHS President and CEO Garry C. Faja presented
awards to tournament winners the EQ-Environmental Quality Company
team of Bob Beckman, John Beckman, Gary Caldwell and Randy
Peterson with golf pro Greg Hodges. The second place team was Timothy
G. Michalik, LLC, including players Paul Jabbour, David Kolb, Frank
Michalik, Tim Michalik, Brian Miller and pro Joe Pollack. The women’s
