1997<br />

Lilly Scholarship Program begins<br />

They have the grades and the test scores, but<br />

scholarships have helped make college possible for<br />

more than 200 local students since 1997. The Lilly<br />

Endowment <strong>Community</strong> Scholarship Program initiated<br />

the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s scholarship efforts by providing full<br />

f<strong>our</strong>-year scholarships to attend any college or<br />

university in the state of Indiana. Since that inaugural<br />

year, many scholarship recipients have gone on to<br />

graduate from college and become doctors, lawyers,<br />

experts in their fields, and successful citizens.<br />

The Lilly Endowment <strong>Community</strong> Scholarship Program provides full<br />

tuition and fees to any college or university in the State of Indiana in<br />

addition to providing $800/year for books. The <strong>2011</strong> recipients<br />

were: Adam Alamillo (Valparaiso High School), Mayra Martinez<br />

(Portage High School) and Ian Ansburg (Boone Grove High School).<br />

The Launch Y<strong>our</strong> Career Scholarship is<br />

available to students attending the <strong>Porter</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> Career and Technical Education<br />

Center. Recipients were: Rebeka Dres<br />

(Valparaiso High School), Krystle Koedyker<br />

(Valparaiso High School), Carissa<br />

Martinez (Chesterton High School), Megan<br />

Price (Portage High School), and Kayla<br />

Turner (Portage High School).<br />

1997<br />

NIPSCO provided funding for $1000<br />

scholarships to: Rebecca Shutske (Kouts<br />

High School), Rachel Lundstrom (Valparaiso<br />

High School), Samantha Loza (Portage High<br />

School), Laura MacNeill (Hebron High<br />

School), Cassandra Gibson (Washington<br />

Township High School), Robert Conrick<br />

(Chesterton High School) and Jana<br />

Prochaska (Morgan Township High School).<br />

“The scholarship made my<br />

degree possible,” said Nicole Wilcox<br />

who graduated from Purdue University with a<br />

degree in aerospace engineering in 2008.<br />

“Without it, I would have had to settle<br />

for staying at home and studying at<br />

the extension where they don’t even<br />

offer aerospace engineering. I feel<br />

lucky to have been given this<br />

wonderful opportunity.”<br />

Shawn Moyer was a 1999 Endowment <strong>Community</strong><br />

Scholar who passed away during his sophomore year<br />

at Taylor University. Lilly Endowment and the<br />

<strong>Foundation</strong> endowed the remaining balance of<br />

Shawn’s scholarship to create this award for<br />

graduates of Kouts High School. The <strong>2011</strong> recipients<br />

were: Keren Kandel and David Hershberger.<br />

The <strong>Porter</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong> provided $4000<br />

scholarships to: Sarah Sanchez<br />

(Andrean High School), Nicole<br />

Green (Chesterton High School)<br />

and Caitlyn Ludington (Wheeler<br />

High School).
