He is married to the former Brenda Demond Partee,<br />

who is a physician. They have three children.<br />

Dr. Robert R. Waller, president and chairman<br />

emeritus of the Mayo Found<strong>at</strong>ion, joined the board<br />

in January. After receiving his undergradu<strong>at</strong>e degree<br />

from Duke University and gradu<strong>at</strong>e degree from<br />

the University of Tennessee <strong>College</strong> of Medicine,<br />

Waller began his professional career as professor of<br />

ophthalmology and department chair <strong>at</strong> Mayo Medical<br />

School in Rochester, MN. He served as a board<br />

member of the Mayo Clinic Found<strong>at</strong>ion from 1978-<br />

98; chair of the executive committee from 1988-97;<br />

and president and CEO of the Mayo Found<strong>at</strong>ion from<br />

1988-98.<br />

In 1987, Waller received the Distinguished Alumnus<br />

Award from University of Tennessee and was made<br />

an honorary fellow of the Royal <strong>College</strong> of Surgeons<br />

in Ireland. In 1992 he received the Medical Executive<br />

Award from the American <strong>College</strong> of Medical Group<br />

Administr<strong>at</strong>ors. Most recently, in <strong>2003</strong>, he was inducted<br />

into the N<strong>at</strong>ion's Health Care Hall of Fame.<br />

Waller is a member of numerous professional groups<br />

including the AMA and the Healthcare Leadership<br />

Council. Additionally, he serves as a board member<br />

of Hormel Foods, Union Planters Bank, the Malcolm<br />

Baldridge N<strong>at</strong>ional Quality Award Found<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. He is also<br />

a member of the N<strong>at</strong>ional Advisory Council for the<br />

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.<br />

He is married to the former Sarah Pickens '63. They<br />

Jim Springfield '51 has shed new<br />

light on the disposition of the quarry<br />

in Bald Knob, AR, which the college<br />

once owned and from where the<br />

stone for the buildings once came<br />

"My f<strong>at</strong>her, C.L. Springfield, was<br />

hired by Dr. Diehl as bursar in January<br />

1936. He retired in 1968 after more<br />

than 32 years as the comptroller, an<br />

expanded job with a different title. He<br />

told me why the college had to quit<br />

using its Bald Knob quarry. The town<br />

of Bald Knob was expanding and after<br />

a certain d<strong>at</strong>e the college would no<br />

longer be able to dynamite the stone<br />

from the quarry walls.<br />
