Section 4A/4AA History
In 1995-96, high school wrestling in Minnesota went from 2 classes to 3 classes
in both team and individual competition. The first season of the present 3-class system,
the season of 1995-96, the 3 classes were named AA, A, and B, but one year later the 3
classes were renamed to: AAA, AA, and A.
The following is a brief history of Section 4AA team and individual results since
the season of 1995-96.
In the 15 years since, section 4AA has been well represented at the state
tournament. Section 4AA has won the AA team championship 9 times, including the last
7 consecutive years; the section has also been AA team runner-up three times, and one
fourth place finish. On the individual side, 120 place-winners have come from section
4AA, including 23 state champions.
This year, we start the section 4AA individual section tournament with 19
returning state entrants, 9 of which placed in the state tournament last year including 2
returning state champions. The section tournament also touts 18 ranked wrestlers.
