LOCAL FOOD GUIDE
Your Guide to Local, Sustainable & Organic Food in Central Indiana
Our mission is to enhance the health
of our community by improving the
food system and increasing access
to resources and nutritious food.
We envision a community in which
we are conscious consumers of
nutritious food, and we understand
the role of food in building
a community, strengthening
the economy, and valuing the
environment. We have access to a
diverse range of healthy, affordable
food. We have the opportunity,
means, and skills to grow and
prepare healthy foods. Consumers,
producers, planners, and policy
makers align to fulfill this vision.
Our members include volunteer
representatives from government,
consumer, business, farm,
multicultural, anti-hunger advocacy,
faith and community development
groups who are working together to
bridge the gap between producers
and consumers.
Why Buy Local?
Every time you purchase food, you make
a choice that’s more important than just
what’s for dinner.
Locally grown food tastes better.
Several studies have shown that the
average distance food travels from farm
to plate is 1,500 miles. Local food was
probably picked within the past day or two.
Local produce is better for you.
Produce loses nutrients during the
time from farm to table. Organic
growing practices encourage farmers
to focus more on nutrient density than
shippability.
Local food supports local farm families.
Local farmers who sell directly to
customers get full retail price for their
food. At a typical supermarket, farmers
now get less than 10 cents of the retail
food dollar. Our agricultural landscape
will survive only as long as farms are
financially viable.
Local food supports a clean environment
and benefits wildlife.
A farm focused on soil quality benefits
more than just the end product. When
supporting local, you are supporting
good stewards of land, who value
fertile soil and clean water. In addition,
the habitat of the farm is the perfect
environment for wildlife.
