DR. RICHARD JOHNSTON is directing a<br />

KARL M. HOLVIK was recently elected<br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> the Northcentral D ivision <strong>of</strong> the<br />

THELMA EMILE HUNTER was piano soloist<br />

with the Chamber Orchestra on January<br />

23 in Carnegie Hall.<br />

PRESSER, "Prelude to Winter," "Carols in<br />

Counterpoint," and "Canon for String Orchestra,"<br />

were played by the Germania Orchestra<br />

"Playing the French Horn," an article by<br />

JOSEPH SCHMOLL, was published in the January<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> The Instrumentalist. Schmoll is<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> brass and theory at Texas Southern<br />

<strong>University</strong>, Houston.<br />

JOHN FERRELL, violinist, played in a joint<br />

violin and piano recital at the State <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Iowa, Iowa City, on February 22 .<br />

district governor <strong>of</strong> Rotary International in<br />

northern Connecticut and western Massachusetts.<br />

DR. FRANK W. REYNOLDS, director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

bureau <strong>of</strong> chronic diseases and geriatrics,<br />

New York State Health D epartment, has<br />

been named chairman <strong>of</strong> the state employees<br />

division <strong>of</strong> the 1959 Heart Fund.<br />

1938<br />

DR. ERNEST B. EMERSON, JR., was awarded<br />

a citation on October 4 by the president<br />

<strong>of</strong> Williams College. The citation read, " Ori<br />

the occasion <strong>of</strong> the fall convocation, with<br />

Creativity in Modern Science as its theme,<br />

the President, Trustees and Faculty <strong>of</strong> Williams<br />

College send greetings and congratulations<br />

to Ernest B. Emerson, Jr., who<br />

through his continuing efforts in science is<br />

furthering the welfare and security <strong>of</strong> our<br />

DANIEL KINGMAN conducted the Sacramento<br />

(Calif.) Philharmonic Orchestra on<br />

January 23 in a performance <strong>of</strong> his "Pastorale<br />

and Scherzo."<br />

"The Son <strong>of</strong> Man," an oratorio for soloists,<br />

chorus, organ and symphonic orchestra<br />

by ANTHONY TAFFS, was presented at Albion<br />

(Mich.) College on December 7. The<br />

work was commissioned by the Summer Fellowship<br />

Grant program at Albion College<br />

DR. JAMES C. MACDERMOTT, JR., closed<br />

his <strong>of</strong>fice in Wellington, Ohio, on March 1<br />

in order to take two years <strong>of</strong> special training<br />

in anesthesia at St. Luke's Hospital, Cleveland.<br />

1944<br />

DR. HENRY T. CLARK, JR., coordinator <strong>of</strong><br />

the Division <strong>of</strong> Health Affairs at the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> North Carolina, recently returned<br />

from Europe where he spent two months<br />

studying medical care programs.<br />

DR. DAVID R. METCALF is director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

EKG Laboratory at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Colorado<br />

Medical School, Denver.<br />

DR. DONALD E. ROWLEY, president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

medical staff <strong>of</strong> Athol (Mass.) Memorial<br />

Hospital, was recently certified by the American<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Internal Medicine as a specialist<br />

in internal medicine following the<br />

successful completion <strong>of</strong> his oral examination.<br />

A son, Jonathan, was born on February 6<br />

to Dr. and Mrs. JOHN SEIDLIN. They are residing<br />

DR. ROBERT H . GREENLAW was awarded<br />

one <strong>of</strong> six national fellow hips in radiother-<br />

and Mrs. Baumgartner in performance.<br />

JERRY A. BAILEY is piano instructor at<br />

1956<br />

JEAN EICHELBERGER and Frederick Ivey<br />

were married on December 27 in Europe.<br />

DR. MURRAY NORTH, director <strong>of</strong> the Anchorage<br />

(Alaska) School <strong>of</strong> Music, was commissioned<br />

by Robert Shaw to arrange "Symphony<br />

<strong>of</strong> Psalms" by Stravinski for two<br />

pianos and timpani for a performance in the<br />

Anchorage Music Festival this June. He is<br />

the Alaskan field organizer for the National<br />

Guild <strong>of</strong> Piano Teachers.<br />

ANNE MORROW is teaching piano and<br />

theory at the Mississippi State College for<br />

Women, Columbus. She gave a full piano<br />

recital at the college in February.<br />

MARION HACKBARTH is studying music<br />

and piano at the Academy <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts in<br />

Vienna, Austria.<br />

D. HANNAY, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> music at<br />

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., was<br />

presented at the college on November 25 by<br />

DANIEL ]. STOLPER is playing oboe with<br />

the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra.<br />

DR. JOHN POZDRO, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

theory at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kansas, Lawrence,<br />

has been appointed chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first annual Mid-American Symposium <strong>of</strong><br />

Contemporary American Music to be held at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kansas this spring.<br />

DR. WILLIAM HUBBARD BAXTER, JR. ,<br />

spoke at a Festival <strong>of</strong> Arts event on January<br />

25, sponsored by the Birmingham (Ala.)<br />

Opera Guild, on the trans-planting <strong>of</strong> opera<br />

from Europe to America.<br />

1958<br />

DR. GUY FRANK lectured at Florence<br />

(Ala.) State College on February 12 and<br />

13 on "The Evolution <strong>of</strong> Jazz."<br />

$16,000 grant, which starts on July 1, is renewable<br />

for two years. He will be engaged<br />

in a training program directed primarily to<br />

treatment rather than diagnosis.<br />

DR. CARL BUTENAS has been appointed<br />

secretary <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> the Memorial Hospital,<br />

Meriden, Conn.<br />

1954<br />

CAPT. JOSEPH C. SEEGER is assigned to<br />

the U. S. Air Force Hospital, Chanute Air<br />

Force Base, as an ophthalmologist.<br />

Gradu ate Med ical<br />

1952<br />

DR. MILTON TOPOREK is doing advanced<br />

research at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia,<br />

where he is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> biochemistry. He has received a grant <strong>of</strong><br />

$10,090 a year for three years from the National<br />

Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health, the Public Health<br />

Research Center, Bethesda, Md., for a study<br />

entitled, " Plasma Protein Production in Tumor-Bearing<br />

Rats."<br />

1956<br />

JOHN S. WIBERG has been discharged from<br />

the U. S. Air Force and is a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

biochemistry division <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Technology. He has a Public Health<br />

Service Post Doctoral Research Fellowship.
