SONGBOOK NIGHT

Welcome to Songbook Night!
Songbook Night creates community by bringing
people together through singing. People love to sing,
especially in groups where they don’t have to feel
like they’re on the spot. It fills a need that is old as
humanity.
I’ve experienced this firsthand through many years of
singing with people around many campfires, but 2011
was the year that we started playing Songbook Night
out at venues. Seeing scores of ‘ordinary people’
come out and sing their heads off has been truly
inspirational.
2011 was also the first year that I started seeing
copies of the Songbook that people I barely knew
had printed themselves. This is a long way from
the humble beginnings with about 50 songs pulled
down from the Intarwebs. Starting with a handful
of songs by The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Beck,
White Stripes, and other classics, I quickly discovered
that you can’t trust everything you read on the nets.
Wrong chords. Wrong words. Wrong verses, missing
lyrics.
For 5+ years, I’ve been honing the book you’re holding
in your hands now. Long hours playing the songs in
iTunes (and now Spotify!), with a guitar and InDesign
have allowed them to be corrected and expanded.
The work is never done, as I’m always finding new
things to fix and new songs to add. This time out,
we’ve added Neil Young, more Dylan, The Cars, more
Dead, more Eagles, Elvis(!), The Go-Gos, The Talking
Heads, and much more.
