The first six issues of received a great response. We will continue with mdv news ; however we would like increase our focus on more in-depth information. Therefore, we have slightly changed the existing layout. In the future, we will inform you more about developed products through professional articles. In this issue, there will be two such articles. Day specific planning within the Days of Operation module is a topic that is important for many customers. With the R 2004/1, this was released, and in R 2004/2 some additional features were added. The developments were implemented free of cost within the framework of the maintenance agreement. With the support of the Transport Authority of Zurich and the Transport Authority of Basel we have created a module that enables the transport planner to analyse the existing network and transfers and run a fully automatic optimization program. This topic is explained more in depth in the second article. Of course we also would like to continue to inform you about current implementations and experiences. Since the end of 2003, the Transport Authority Eastern Region (VOR) based in Vienna uses the IJP for dynamic generation of timetable booklet pages on the Internet . They draw a very favourable balance. At the end you will find an overview of upcoming events. mdv news II/2004 - 3 - By the end of the nineties, the DIVA system had developed into a standardized tool for transport authorities to collect and publish timetable data. Through the cooperation with HPW (now Siemens TTS) and the acquisition of the planning program IFES/DIES, the DIVA system was further developed to be used by of transport operators. The first implementation at an urban transport operator was in the end of 2000 at the Transport Operator of Freiburg. During the following years, the DIVA system was implemented successfully at many urban transport operators. The requirements to the system increased, especially through the use of the system by transport authorities that run integrated planning for various transport operators. As a result of this development, DIVA is today the only planning program that supports planning for both regional and urban transport operators, train and track related planning, planning of offered services, publishing, and the supply of necessary interfaces. mdv started the development of DIVA 3 during the middle of 2000. In many discussions with the customers, for example at the user groups, the requirements for DIVA 3 were compiled. These are mainly: - The complete system should better support large installations with 20 or more parallel working users. This required the new development of the Common Data Server. The old version of the server was optimized for maximum work performance for up to three users. The new Common Data Server uses new techniques for network communication and efficient use of resources on the server hardware. The communication between the Common data Server and the clients was completely developed on a CORBA basis. CORBA is a technique that enables the transfer of whole objects (for example, a Stop with all sub-structures, such as areas, platforms and attributes) via the network. CORBA works parallel and therefore uses modern hardware optimally. Current servers normally have several processors. Multiple processors are also well supported by operating systems since Windows 2000. The Common Data Server is therefore a process with many program threads, which can be executed in parallel. Thus, if several users request data from the server at the same time, these requests can be executed in parallel. This greatly increases the performance of the complete system. - Installations with many users requested an access rights policy in order to regulate access to the data. DIVA Access Rights is a part of all DIVA programs. It is not necessary to use DIVA Access Rights. It can be deactivated for users that do not need it. - The design possibilities in the presentation programs, especially the Stop Timetable, should be more flexible. The presentation programs should also be able to compute print outputs for the Intermodal Journey Planner. Therefore the Stop Timetable, Book Typesetting, and CBS (Central Bus Stop) modules were changed into a client/server system. At the server side, the presentation server was implemented bundle the requests and run the computation. Thus, several presentation programs are also available in the Internet. - With DIVA 3, the new days of operation concept was implemented for operational planning. Details about this can be found in the article "Day Specific Planning in DIVA" this issue of mdv news . The development and delivery of DIVA 3 was to be very smooth. The changes were also supposed to be available as soon as possible. The changes were made during the last three years, without problems for the customers. Delivery of DIVA3 With the DIVA Release R2/2004 the developments of DIVA 3 are completed. DIVA has noticeably grown, which is shown through the number of customers. We support, for example, installations with more than 3,500 routes and 15,000 stops in one network. Today, DIVA is the only planning program which enables integrated planning (timetable/ vehicle scheduling, duty scheduling, GIS, optimization, planning of offered services, personnel deployment, publication, IJP, etc.), including the supply of an AVL system, for all transport operators in a large transport authority. What happens next? The development of DIVA 4 has already started. We have collected requirements during the last User Group at the NVBW in Stuttgart and discussed them with the users. We will take the requirements and prepare a concept for the implementation of DIVA 4 within the next months. We are all looking forward to the exciting further developments of the system.
