Dean Lavenson Photo Pediatric among pulmonology America’s program best oaks Day 2007 is a day Joe and Jessica Klousing will never forget. It was the day they discovered their first child, Luke, had cystic fibrosis. “When my wife was pregnant, we found out she was a carrier,” Joe said. “I was tested and came back as a carrier as well. But it was still a shock to learn that Luke had CF.” Cystic fibrosis, or “CF” as it is commonly known, is a genetic disease that affects the entire body but particularly the lungs and digestive system. It causes individuals to have frequent lung and sinus infections, difficulty absorbing food properly and problems with the pancreas. While people with CF normally have shorter life spans than most, advancements in medical care have made it easier for them to lead longer, healthier lives. Luke is just one example of the many children who have been helped by the pulmonology program at Kosair Children’s Hospital. Since 2009, the program has been ranked as one of the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the Cystic Fibrosis Center, which is part of Kosair Children’s Hospital, has been designated by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as one of five benchmark centers in the United States. “Our research, especially on cystic fibrosis, asthma and wheezing infants, sets us apart from other hospitals,” said Ronald Morton, M.D., associate director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Kosair Children’s Hospital and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. “The Cystic Fibrosis Center is always working toward improving the quality of our care, whether it’s keeping up with the latest technology or developing checklists and evaluations to make sure our patients get the best possible care.” The Klousings have become well-versed in CF and are frequent visitors to the Cystic Fibrosis Center. “We visited Kosair Children’s Hospital six times during the first year of Luke’s life,” Jessica said. “I’ve lived in Louisville my entire life and had never been there before.” Today, Luke is a happy 4-year-old, and Jessica and Joe have been very pleased with the care the physicians have provided their son. “They have been aggressive in Luke’s treatment and have developed a good regimen and plan for him,” Jessica said. “We are blessed to have a facility that has one of the best programs in the country so close by.” With a strong support system of physicians, family and friends, Jessica and Joe have every hope that Luke will continue to do well. “You have to play the hand you’ve been dealt, and I believe God gave us Luke for a reason,” Joe said. “With Kosair Children’s Hospital being in our backyard, so to speak, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to treat his condition.” To learn more about the pulmonology program at Kosair Children’s Hospital, search for “pulmonary services” at KosairChildrens.com. –Kama Korvela Four-year-old Luke Klousing with his father Joe, right, and Ronald Morton, M.D. Kosair Children’s Hospital Home and BMW Raffle Two prize drawings in one!
