27. Thus, in the Phenomenology, the sequence of the experiences
of consciousness is contingent only for phenomenal consciousness.
We who recollect these experiences in so doing discover the necessity
of the progression from the one to the next. What the Phenomenology
demonstrates is the immanence in consciousness 6f
every experience. But we must recognize that this (synthetic) necessity
is not always easy to grasp and that to the modern r(;!ader the
transitions appear arbitrary. Moreover, these transitions pose th"e
problem of the relation of the Phenomenology to history.
