Most of the Red Data Book species are distributed<br />

across the Indian sub-c<strong>on</strong>tinent, with 17 migratory<br />

species and 57 resident species in India. Migratory<br />

species face severe threat from hunting and loss of<br />

habitat. To protect species that cross <strong>on</strong>e or more borders,<br />

where c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> deficiencies in <strong>on</strong>e country will<br />

affect the measures undertaken by other countries. The<br />

Indian IBA program with the C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the<br />

C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of Migratory Species of Wild Animals<br />

(B<strong>on</strong>n C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>) will try to facilitate internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

agreements between countries for the protecti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

In 1963, Internati<strong>on</strong>al Red Data Books were<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceived by the late Sir Peter Scott as “a register<br />

of threatened wildlife that includes definiti<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

degrees of threat”.<br />

1) 1980: the first bird ‘RED DATA BOOK’<br />

published by the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Council for Bird<br />

Preservati<strong>on</strong> (ICBP).<br />

2) 1988: ‘BIRDS TO WATCH - 1’ (Red Data<br />

Book) The ICBP World Checklist of<br />

Threatened Birds published by the<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al Council for Bird Preservati<strong>on</strong><br />

(ICBP).<br />

[It lists 1,029 species as threatened but <strong>on</strong>ly brief<br />

supporting informati<strong>on</strong> is provided.]<br />

3) 1994: ‘BIRDS TO WATCH -2’, The World<br />

List of Threatened Birds by N. J. Collar, M. J.<br />

Crosby and A. J. Stattersfield published by<br />

BirdLife Internati<strong>on</strong>al.<br />

1,111 species. Birds are the first tax<strong>on</strong>omic group to be<br />

evaluated comprehensively using new, more objective<br />

Kalpavriksh, an NGO. The IBA objectives and all the<br />

identified prioritized sites have been included in the<br />

NBSAP.<br />

4) In 2000, ‘THREATENED BIRDS OF THE<br />

WORLD’ published by BirdLife<br />

Threatened birds of the world covers 1,186 threatened<br />

species in detail with each species mapped and<br />

illustrated. Near Threatened birds are documented for<br />

the first time. ]<br />
