FOE Joins Students to Protect Bald
Eagles and Promote Literacy
The American Eagle & Literacy
Challenge is an initiative started in
St. Augustine, Florida by Timberlin
Creek Elementary School students
to support and raise awareness for
the American bald eagle and
literacy. A major goal is to assist the
non-profit American Eagle
Foundation in its quest to have the
Governors of all 50 states proclaim
June 20th as “American Eagle Day”
and support its “American Eagle
Fund” endowment for bald eagle
recovery and protection efforts.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles has
joined the effort, with Aeries and
Auxiliaries throughout the United
States aiding the cause. “Sponsoring
this program is a natural fit for us,”
said Grand Worthy President Bill
Loffer. “We provide our
fundraising efforts to those
organizations vowing to
make a difference in our
communities. Promoting
literacy and preserving our
beloved bald eagle is
something we truly believe
in supporting.”
IS ALSO THE GOAL
Winter Conference in Orlando,
Timberlin Creek students talked
about the program, explaining that
after all 50 proclamations have been
gathered, President George W. Bush
will be asked for his support in
making June 20 “American Eagle
Day” in the United States.
Students are now asking their
fellow eagle mascot schools in
Florida to raise $1,000 each. Fifty
percent of the money raised will
benefit bald eagle care/recovery
through the AEF, and the other half
will promote literacy. If every school
raises $1,000, Florida alone would
raise $150,000 to support bald
eagles and literacy.
In April 2007, State Aerie
President Ernie Repp is joining
students throughout Florida in
challenging schools in the other 49
states to also raise $1,000 apiece. If
each state matches Florida’s goals,
the initiative could raise $7.5 million,
which would be equally
divided to support literacy
projects and the AEF’s
“American Eagle Fund.”
In addition, each of
Florida’s Eagles Aeries is
“adopting” an eagle
mascot school to assist
them in reaching their
goals.
