V O L U M E 3 , N U M B E R 3 Business Administration Students Honored The Business Administration Department is pleased to congratulate Business Administration majors who were recently honored by state-wide organizations. Five NJCU students were inducted into the New Jersey Collegiate Business Administration Association (NJCBAA) Honor Society: Ms. Rezarta Aliaj, Ms. Nalini Balgobin, Mr. Douglas Mose Elaine Lopez, and Ms. Navindra Ramlakhan. The induction ceremony took place in Trenton on May 2. The NJCBAA annually invites the top 1% of undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in business. The NJCU Student Investment Management Group, also known as the SIM Group, completed its second year of operation, once again outperforming the S&P 500. Public Accountants (NJSCPA): Ms. Karen Foster, who works in the NJCU Controller’s office and has completed both Accounting and Finance specializations; Ms. Aziza Kroun, a high school teacher in her native Algeria currently working for the Hudson County Division of Welfare as a Human exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The group’s investments have consistently out-performed the S&P 500 index. The return on the portfolio since its initial investments in April 2007 through April 2008 is 7.82%, compared to a decline in the S&P index of –0.42% in a similar time period. Along with opportunities to analyze and select investments, members also may be chosen to intern with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. (now Wachovia Securities), the brokerage firm through which the groups funds are traded. The first student to participate was Finance major Nazmi Tarhan. According to Mr. Jason Perez, A.G. Edwards account manager, Mr. Tarhan outperformed students from P A G E 2 Services Specialist; and Ms. Maria La- Freniere, a Presidential Scholar attending the Communiversity, and a staff accountant with AIG. The Guarini Student Investor award was presented to Mr. Jason Nadolny, president and chief investment officer of the Student Investment Management Group, for his leadership role in the first two years of the group’s operations. Health Sciences Graduate Student Wins Grant for Medical Center Ms. Alda Nelson, a student in the MS in Health Sciences / Health Administration program, recently scored a significant accomplishment during her internship at the Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC) Palliative Care Unit. Ms. Nelson was responsible for obtaining a $15,000 grant for the Medical Center. The funds will be used in the care of patients in the unit to provide a range of services. Among other things, the grant will be used to host ‘lunch and learn’ sessions for caregivers, purchase therapeutic videos for patients, and provide community outreach programs. V O L U M E 3 , N U M B E R 3 P A G E 3 Professional Security Studies Program Certification First in State New Jersey City University has become the first institution of higher education in New Jersey to receive certification from the National Security Agency (NSA) Committee on National Security Systems for “Information Systems Security Officers (ISSO) Standard 4014—Under Authority of the National Security Agency,” a certification program for information systems security officers. This is the second certification received by NJCU for its graduate security program; last year the Information Security (INFOSEC) Standard 4011 certification was obtained. Certification by the national agency ensures that the NJCU certificate program complies with the National Training Standard for Information Systems Security Officers (ISSO) at the entry level (mid-level management). Further, the NJCU certification application was cited by National reviewers as “. . . a model for other colleges and universities across the Nation to emulate.” Those who earn certification as information systems security officers can work as network security specialists and investigators who aim to reduce such crimes as terrorism, identity theft, and computer hacking. By obtaining two prestigious certifications in back-to-back years, NJCU is now eligible to proceed with the National Security Agency in becoming a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Security. This designation will place NJCU among the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation and allow for capacity building grants, federal internships, and student scholarships. The NJCU Professional Security Studies masters program, with a specialization in Informa- Two Books Published by CPS Faculty The College of Professional Studies is celebrating two books recently published by faculty members Dr. John Laski (Business Administration Department), and Professor Kevin Malley (Chairperson, Fire Science Department). Fire Science department chairperson Kevin Malley, with Dr. David K. Spierer, has coauthored a book, Get Firefighter Fit. Based on Professor Malley’s experience building successful physical training programs for the New York City Fire Department, the book uses a multiphased approach to training to achieve the peak level of fitness required by professional firefighters. All book sale earnings will be donated to a new NJCU Fire Science Department student scholarship honoring the two FDNY members, Thomas A. Gardner and Kevin W. Donnelly, who lost their lives in the north and south towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In his book, Capitalism and Christianity: A Moral and Ethical Dilemma, Dr. Laski addresses the idea that there is a certain amount of hypocrisy in trying to coalesce capitalism or capitalist behaviors with Christian behaviors, and discusses paradigm differences which may preclude coexistence without significant violations of each.
