FRUIT TREES Malus - Crabapple Dolgo Crabapple Malus x 'Dolgo' Mature Size: 30’ x 20’ (10 x 6 m) Crown Shape: Open, spreading Flowers: White Hardiness: Zone 2 A edible crabapple with many ornamental features. Well known for its showy white blooms in spring followed by brilliant crimson fruit. Malus - Applecrab Kerr Applecrab Malus x ‘Kerr’ Parentage: Dolgo x Haralson Fruit Colour: Dark purple-red Fruit Size: 4 - 5 cm Hardiness: Zone 2 Small fruit has crisp white flesh with a sweet-tart taste. Good for eating fresh, canning, jelly or juice. Ripens in late September and stores well. Resistant to fireblight. Developed at the Morden Research Station in 1952. Rescue Applecrab Malus x ‘Rescue’ Parentage: Blushed Calville OP Fruit Colour: Yellow, red stripes Fruit Size: 3 - 4 cm Hardiness: Zone 2 Small fruit is very sweet for eating fresh and good for canning. Ripens in late August. The tree is very productive. Developed at the research station in Scott, Saskatchewan in 1936. Malus - Dwarf Apple Gemini ® Goodland Honeycrisp ® Norkent Odyssey ® These prairie apple cultivars are grown on Bud 9 dwarfing rootstock. Mature plants will be approximately 50% smaller in size than apple trees growing on standard rootstock. Advantages of dwarf apples: 1. The trees will begin to bear fruit earlier; significant fruit production may be two years earlier than with apple trees growing on a standard rootstock. 2. The trees are smaller and will take up less space in your yard. The result is less cost and effort to maintain and harvest. 3. By fruiting earlier, dwarf apple trees reduce the vigorous vegetative growth and make the tree more winter hardy. Prunus - Apricot Manchurian Strain Prunus mandschurica Parentage: Seedling Fruit Colour: Golden yellow Fruit Size: 4 - 5 cm Hardiness: Zone 3 A cold hardy seedling strain developed from local seed sources. Suitable pollinator for other apricot cultivars. Scout Apricot Prunus x ‘Scout’ Parentage: Manchurian seedling Fruit Colour: Golden yellow Fruit Size: 3.5 - 4.5 cm Hardiness: Zone 3 Produces bronze-gold fruit in early August. Fruit is good for canning and jam and fair for eating. Introduced by Morden Research Station in 1937. Westcot Apricot Prunus x ‘Westcot’ Parentage: Scout x McClure Fruit Colour: Golden yellow Fruit Size: 3.5 - 4.5 cm Hardiness: Zone 3 This prairie cultivar has hardy flower buds and produces large, golden, freestone fruit. Excellent for eating fresh or canning. Introduced by Morden Research Station in 1982. POLLINATION REQUIRED All fruit tree and small fruit varieties that require a different pollinizer cultivar have been marked with this symbol. Cross pollination refers to the transfer of pollen between flowers of genetically-distinct genetically distinct plants. Pollinators, usually insects, are vectors for pollen movement For apples and pears, two different cultivars must be growing in close proximity for successsuccessful fruit production. Plums and apricots have strong preferences for certain pollinizers. Pure wild plums are the best pollinizers for hybrid plums. Toka Hybrid Plum Prunus x ‘Toka’ Parentage: P. americana x P. simoni Fruit Colour: Dark red Fruit Size: 3 - 4 cm Hardiness: Zone 3 An excellent pollinizer that produces medium sized, rich flavored fruit. Fruit ripens in late- August. Developed at the Experimental Station in Brookings, South Dakota. Pyrus - Pear Early Gold ® Pear Pyrus x ‘Jefgold’ Parentage: Seedling of ‘Ure’ Fruit Colour: Golden Fruit Size: 5 cm Hardiness: Zone 2 A seedling of ‘Ure’ with improved vigour, chlorosis resistance and cold hardiness. Fruit is similar in taste to ‘Ure’ but matures 10 to 14 days earlier. A Jeffries Nurseries introduction. Golden Spice Pear Pyrus x ‘Golden Spice’ Parentage: Unknown Fruit Colour: Yellow and red Fruit Size: 5 cm Hardiness: Zone 3 The fruit ripens in mid-September. The skin is medium yellow lightly blushed with dull red. It is fair for fresh eating but very good for sauce. A good pollinizer with fire blight resistance.
