180 Years Ago<br />

In 1832, Eli Geddings, MD, was<br />

appointed dean. Born in South<br />

Carolina in 1799, he became<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> College <strong>of</strong> South Carolina<br />

in 1825. He joined <strong>Maryland</strong>’s<br />

faculty as chair <strong>of</strong> anatomy and<br />

physiology. Fluent in 14 languages,<br />

Geddings was a capable teacher<br />

and prolific writer who served as<br />

editor for several journals. He<br />

helped revive <strong>the</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> College<br />

<strong>of</strong> South Carolina after <strong>the</strong> Civil War,<br />

accepting <strong>the</strong> appointment as chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> surgery.<br />

120 Years Ago<br />

In 1892, Samuel T. Earle, class <strong>of</strong><br />

1870, was named president <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first <strong>Maryland</strong> State Board <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> Examiners. A proctologist,<br />

Earle served on <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Baltimore <strong>Medical</strong> College from<br />

1896 to 1907.<br />

50 Years Ago<br />

In 1962, <strong>the</strong> National Boxing<br />

<strong>Association</strong> changed its name to <strong>the</strong><br />

World Boxing <strong>Association</strong>. The<br />

association’s chief medical <strong>of</strong>ficer<br />

was Leon H. Feldman, class <strong>of</strong> 1934,<br />

who was responsible for writing<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> safety codes that<br />

governed boxing throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

world.<br />
