25. Turnitin.com<br />

Plagiarism is considered a serious academic offence. <strong>Dalhousie</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

subscribes to Turnitin.com , a service which allows instructors to check student papers<br />

for originality. Academic Computing Services and the <strong>Dalhousie</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Libraries jointly support this service.<br />

26. <strong>University</strong> Bookstore<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Bookstore, owned and operated by <strong>Dalhousie</strong>, is a service<br />

and resource centre for the university community and the general public.<br />

The Bookstore has required and recommended texts, reference books and<br />

supplies, as well as workbooks, self-help manuals and other reference<br />

material. As well, you can find titles by <strong>Dalhousie</strong> authors.<br />

The Bookstore carries all necessary and supplementary stationery and<br />

supplies. Also available are gift items, mugs, clothing and crested wear,<br />

cards, jewelry, class rings and backpacks with new items being introduced<br />

on a regular basis. A Special Order department is located at the customer<br />

service area and will order and ship books worldwide and work with<br />

faculties and departments to meet their specific needs..<br />

The main Bookstore is situated on the lower level of the Student Union<br />

Building on <strong>University</strong> Avenue, and is open year round, Monday to<br />

Saturday (hours vary throughout the year).<br />

The Health Sciences Bookstore has the largest and most complete medical<br />

book section in Atlantic Canada, with over 2,000 titles in stock. Thousands<br />

of other titles are specially ordered annually, and the department ships out<br />

books to consumers and hospitals throughout the world. The Health<br />

Sciences Bookstore is located in the Dentistry building, 5981 <strong>University</strong><br />

Avenue, and is open year round, Monday to Saturday. Hours vary<br />

throughout the year.<br />

The Sexton Campus Bookstore is located in the Student Service Centre at<br />

1360 Barrington Street (Building B) and is open from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.<br />

Monday to Friday. It supplies texts and reference books required for<br />

Architecture and Engineering students as well as crested clothing,<br />

stationery and other supplies.<br />

27. <strong>University</strong> Health Services<br />

The university operates a medical clinic, in Howe Hall, at Coburg Road<br />

and LeMarchant Street staffed by family doctors and nurses. Further<br />

specialists’ services are available and will be arranged through the Health<br />

Service when indicated. All information gained about a student by the<br />

Health Service is confidential and may not be released to anyone without<br />

signed permission by the student.<br />

Appointments are made during the clinic’s open hours, from 9 a.m. to 10<br />

p.m., Monday to Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday,<br />

by calling 494-2171. In the event of an urgent medical problem, students<br />

may seek medical advice during clinic hours. After hours, students may<br />

wish to seek assessment at the local emergency room. The QEII emergency<br />

room on Summer Street is the closest emergency room.<br />

All students must have medical and hospital coverage. All Nova Scotia<br />

students are covered by the Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance. All<br />

other Canadian students must maintain coverage from their home<br />

provinces. This is especially important for residents of any province<br />

requiring payment of premiums. All non-Canadian students must be<br />

covered by medical and hospital insurance prior to registration. Details of<br />

suitable insurance may be obtained from the Student Accounts office prior<br />

to registration. Any student who has had a serious illness within the last<br />

12 months, or who has a chronic medical condition, may wish to contact<br />

and advise the Health Services; preferably with a statement from the<br />

28. <strong>University</strong> Secretariat<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Secretariat provides professional and administrative<br />

support and advice to the Board of Governors and <strong>University</strong> Senate so as<br />

to facilitate their effective governance of the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

The Secretariat manages, coordinates and informs the effective operation<br />

of the Board and Senate by:<br />

• Supporting the operations of the <strong>University</strong>'s governance bodies and<br />

their respective standing and ad hoc committees;<br />

• Proposing and developing objectives and plans to establish and<br />

achieve priorities;<br />

• Advising on governance issues and developing and implementing<br />

policies, procedures and processes that reflect governance best<br />

practices;<br />

• Developing, implementing, managing and coordinating the <strong>University</strong><br />

academic integrity, student discipline & academic appeals policies and<br />

processes, and maintaining official records relative to these processes;<br />

• Serving as a repository for <strong>University</strong> policies and information and<br />

data on matters relating to <strong>University</strong> governance; and<br />

• Facilitating communication and collaboration with key stakeholders.<br />

29. Writing Centre<br />

The Writing Centre’s programs recognize that students in all disciplines<br />

are required to write clearly to inform, persuade, or instruct an audience in<br />

term papers, laboratory reports, essay examinations, critical reviews and<br />

other academic assignments. Students benefit from discussing their work<br />

with supportive instructors and peer tutors.<br />

The Centre currently offers a number of services. The main office in the<br />

Learning Commons allows students to obtain advice on writing issues.<br />

Tutors also work part of the week at the Sexton Library and the Kellogg<br />

Library. Finally, seminars are held throughout the university year on<br />

topics such as essay writing, science writing, mechanics of writing, English<br />

as a second language issues, admission applications, etc.<br />
