ASK THE CITY MANAGER
by Jason Gage
ABOUT . . .
DISPLAYING STREET NUMBERS
Q. It was my understanding that the City required all
businesses and residential dwellings to visibly display
their street number. Is this correct?
A. You are correct in understanding that City Code and the
2006 International Fire Code requires all businesses and
dwellings to display the number assigned to them on and in
front of the building. The codes stipulate that the numbers
be at least two and one-half inches tall for residences, and at
least four inches tall for commercial buildings.
While there is no specific prohibition against it, building
officials discourage home owners from "writing out"
their addresses, instead of just putting up numerals. For
example, the city recommends "1029" -- not "one thousand
and twenty-nine." While some might feel that the second
treatment is a bit more "elegant," it does not lend itself
to easy and accurate reading in an emergency, which is
the primary reason the city concerns itself about house
numbers in the first place.
The seconds (and sometimes minutes) saved in an
emergency by having large, clear and easily read house
numbers can literally mean the difference between life and
death. Everyone might want to take a look at his or her house
numbering at night and ask whether an emergency medical
technician, firefighter or police officer could quickly see
them and accurately make them out. The numbers should
be placed where adequate lighting is available. In 911
responses, time is clearly of the essence.
Painting numbers on the curb may provide some additional
help in locating your home, but remember, snow/leaves can
cover up street-side numbering in a hurry. Parked vehicles
can also render the curb numbers useless. Another thing
to keep in mind is to make your numbers contrast with the
color of your home. Numbers on your mailbox are also very
helpful to emergency crews.
This is why the city requirement is for large numbers on
the house. Such numbers are available from many stores
around town. It's a small investment that can pay big
dividends in an emergency situation.
If you have further questions about street numbers, please
contact the Salina Fire Department at 785-826-7340.
