IV. Debrief<br />

D — Among <strong>the</strong> disadvantages:<br />

• Police may arrest people who are do<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g wrong and are not even<br />

gang members.<br />

• The law violates peoples’ basic liberties.<br />

E — Ask students to weigh <strong>the</strong> advantages aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> disadvantages. If <strong>the</strong>y<br />

believe <strong>the</strong> advantages outweigh <strong>the</strong> disadvantages, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y favor <strong>the</strong> policy,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y must also consider alternatives. Tell <strong>the</strong>m that one alternative is<br />

always to do noth<strong>in</strong>g. Ask <strong>the</strong>m if <strong>the</strong>y know <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r alternatives. If <strong>the</strong>y<br />

do, briefly discuss <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

A. Ask students:<br />

• Can you th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r examples <strong>of</strong> policymak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> different branches <strong>of</strong><br />

government? (national and local)<br />

• Why should citizens know about policymak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three branches <strong>of</strong><br />

government? Th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> when know<strong>in</strong>g which branch might be associated with a<br />

particular policy would come <strong>in</strong> handy.<br />

B. After complet<strong>in</strong>g this lesson, have students return to <strong>the</strong> Citizenship Bra<strong>in</strong>storm,<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g and add<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> lists.<br />
