GOING HOME<br />

• Length of stay varies according to the needs of the<br />

mother and bady. The time frame may be a few hours<br />

(four) following birth to two days for a vaginal birth, and<br />

four days for a caesarian birth.<br />

• Follow-up care can be arranged with our domiciliary<br />

midwifery service, if you live within a twenty-five km radius<br />

of the <strong>Bendigo</strong> hospital campus. A referral to a local health<br />

agency, can be arranged if you live out of this area.<br />

• Lactation consultants are available to assist you if you have<br />

breast feeding concerns.<br />

• Family members to help with cooking, washing? Extra home<br />

help may need to be arranged.<br />

• Time out for mother - who will do this?<br />

• Is your baby capsule or infant restraint fitted properly?<br />

Check before day of discharge<br />

• Domiciliary visits – as required.<br />

BIRTH PLAN<br />

PLEASE GIVE YOUR BIRTH PLAN TO YOUR MIDWIFE<br />

ON YOUR ARRIVAL AND ASK ALL STAFF CARING FOR<br />

YOU TO REFER TO THIS PLAN.<br />

It is suggested you make two copies of your birth plan – one for<br />

staff and one for you to keep with you in the labour room suite.<br />

The staff caring for you ask that you express and discuss with<br />

them, any concerns you may have or which may arise during<br />

labour or following birth.<br />

This birth plan is intended to be flexible and may be altered<br />

or varied depending on the circumstances of the birth and<br />

your post natal progress. You may of course, choose not<br />

to use a birth plan at all. Please understand that your birth<br />

plan is not a legally binding contract with the hospital or<br />

the clinicians responsible for your care and treatment. The<br />

purpose of the plan is to assist in achieving the best possible<br />

outcomes for your birth experience, and for your baby.<br />

POST NATAL<br />

Is there anything you may want after the birth of your baby?<br />

DISCHARGE<br />

(Leaving hospital or going home) What is it you want? Going<br />

home following birth, you will need to make sure of extra<br />

help at home. Domiciliary midwives provide support and<br />

visits at home following discharge up to five days from birth.<br />

Following birth you usually only stay in hospital for two nights.<br />

Mothers who have had a caesarean birth stay for four nights.<br />

If there is any medical concerns – length of hospital stay is<br />

extended for as long as necessary.<br />
