Andy Sleich, '27, Weston. W. Va., sends word<br />
that Hunter M. Bennett, '97. of Weston, is "well,<br />
happy and the father of three fine kids, the<br />
youngest being about 10 years old." Mr. Bennett<br />
is one of the community's leading citizens.<br />

'07, (V. Adm., USN), has been nominated and<br />
confirmed as a three-star admiral. 'Ike.* a taskforce<br />

command has been detached and is headed for<br />
new duties slightly closer to Crabtown, where he<br />
makes his home."<br />
Admiral Giffen was a <strong><strong>No</strong>tre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> student in<br />
1895-96. His home is on a farm near Annapolis.<br />

Byron Kanaley is the official candidate for the<br />
vice-presidency of the Mortgage Bankers AssodaUon<br />
of America. He is chairman of the program<br />
committee for the association's annual<br />

Ernest &L Morris, *<strong>06</strong>. South Bend, was unanimously<br />
re-elected national Republican committeeman<br />
from Indiana at a meeting of' the Indiana<br />
delegation in Chicago just prior to the Republican<br />
convention. Mr. Morris, after serving a previous<br />
term in the same position, was defeated at the<br />
state Republican convention on June 2. His successful<br />
opponent, R- W. Lyons of Indianapolis, a<br />
former Ku Klux Klan leader, was subjected to<br />
much critical pressure and resigned within a<br />
short time.<br />
Ambrose O'Connell, '07, president of the Alumni<br />
Association in 1938-39, long one of the best<br />
known of <strong><strong>No</strong>tre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> alumni, has been sworn in<br />
as judge of the Court of Customs and Patent<br />
Appeals in Washington, D.C. He was nominated<br />
for the post by President Roosevelt and confirmed<br />
unanimously by the Senate.<br />
Bom in Iowa in 1881, graduated from <strong><strong>No</strong>tre</strong><br />
<strong>Dame</strong> in 1907 and from Columbia University in<br />
1910, Judge O'Connell worked in New York City<br />
in law, journalism and banking until 1932, when<br />
he became assistant treasurer and office manager<br />
of the Democratic national committee. He was<br />

James A. Farley in 1933. and wcs first as^stant<br />
postmaster general when he resigned last year<br />
to become executive vice-chairman of the Donocratic<br />
national committee. He held this post until<br />
his recent appointment, arranging many of the<br />
details of the recent Chicago convention.<br />

Investigating vocational and personnel placement<br />
activities in other colleges, Bemie V^ *17.<br />
chairman of the Alumni Association Vocational<br />
Committee, and Bill Doolcy, '26, assistant alumni<br />
secretary, have lately enjoyed and profited from<br />
conferences in East Lansing, Mich., with Tom<br />
King, who is director of the Placement Bureau<br />
of Michigan State College. Tom also teaches several<br />
classes in the college and is part owner of<br />
an insurance agency in Lansing.<br />
Tom's only child, Tom, Jr.. is in Marine V-12<br />
training at the University of Michigan. A star<br />
athlete, he had won his monogram in baseball<br />
at Michigan State in his only year there, and<br />
last winter, as a member of the U. of M. basketball<br />
team, he led the Big Ten in individual<br />
scoring for much of the season. He exp3cta to be<br />
moved out of. Ann-Arbor about <strong>No</strong>v. 1 of this<br />
year.<br />
You've read in the papers that'Lt Cflidr. Jack<br />
Meagher will be head coach of the Iowa Seahawks.<br />
One of his assistants there will presumably<br />
be Lt. Cmdr. Larry Mallins, '31. who served<br />
in the same capacity last season, and another assistant<br />
will be Lt (ig) Tom Hearden, '27, who<br />
was recently appointed to the job. Jack, following<br />
four years in the Marines in the World War<br />
I era, coached at St Edward's and Rice in Texas<br />
and at Auburn in Alabama.<br />

1st Lt Araald HcGrath, sending in his new<br />
address (APO. San Francisco) and his special regarda<br />

aroond the South Seas for four mcmths I've finally<br />
been assgned — after a year and a half In the<br />

A letter from Mrs. J(^n F. Kelley informs us<br />
that her husband, Lt Cauir. Kdky, has been detached<br />
from the Atlanta Naval Air Station. Atlanta,<br />
Ga., and has reimrted to <strong>No</strong>rfolk, Va.,<br />
where he was assigned as flight surgeon on an<br />
aircraft carrier.<br />
