Clarissa's preparations for a party of which she is to be hostess.<br />

and back <strong>in</strong> time, and <strong>in</strong> and out of the characters' m<strong>in</strong>ds, to<br />

construct a complete image of Clarissa's life and of the <strong>in</strong>ter-war<br />
