Cheringoma
Living Herbarium
Ten years ago TCT Dalmann contacted Meg Coates Palgrave and requested
this southern African tree expert to assist in the identification of the many
tree species on Catapú. That marked the beginning of a partnership which
has led to extensive botanical research and the establishment of the TCT-
Catapú Cheringoma Herbarium. Meg has now identified over 250 tree
species and collected about 1,400 specimens, now housed in the herbarium,
which is used for research and the continued education of many students.
This booklet is your guide to the Living Herbarium as you walk along the Suni
Trail. Trees are marked with green discs indicating the paths and the numbers
on these discs correspond to the names of the trees within this booklet.

The Suni Trail
The Living Herbarium trail starts near the east
corner of the restaurant, just past the birdbath.
Follow the marked path, which crosses a road to
the sawmill, and continues to the Chissadze River.
At this point you can turn left along the stream to
where this shorter walk rejoins the longer trail
and takes you back to the lodge, through the
centre of a fig tree! Otherwise you can continue
across the stream and follow the trail to Catapú
Pan. This section goes through quite different
open habitat with grassland and acacias. Watch
out for suni, red duiker and samango
monkeys—you may even be fortunate and find
bushpigs on the pan! There are lots of birds too,
Crested Guineafowl, Narina Trogons and also
Yellow-streaked Greenbul in the forested
section.
Meg Coates Palgrave
lives in Harare in Zimbabwe. She was born
in Bulawayo and educated at Umtali High
School. Her interest in plants goes back as far as she can remember. “My parents
gave me packets of seed for my eighth birthday, and a book on wild flowers for my
16th,” being an indication of an early interest which is ongoing today. In 1982/83
Meg worked on photographs and text for Everyone's Guide to the Trees of South
Africa and in 1989 published the booklet A Guide to the Trees of the Mukuvisi
Woodlands and in 1996 Key to the Trees of Zimbabwe. More recently Meg spent the
best part of five years completely revising Keith Coates Palgrave's Trees of southern
Africa, published in 2002. Today, Meg conducts Know Your Trees courses
throughout the sub-continent using keys she has developed for each area. She is a
co-author of the recent publication, Dictionary of names for southern African trees.
Did you know?
TCT Dalmann
has consistently
engaged in community assistance with three
goals in mind. Sustainable apiculture has been
introduced increasing family incomes
within the community. To date TCT Dalmann
and WWF have distributed over 550 hives and
training to communities. Honey is purchased at
above market rates by the Mozambican Honey
Company. Secondly, a successful reforestation project has a positive impact on
climate change mitigation with over 11,300 indigenous trees. Thirdly, the
protection of the bio-diversity of the Catapú region by collaborating with
scientists such as Meg Coates Palgrave, the Eduardo Mondlane University and other
universities and natural history museums from around the globe.
All of these projects (and so much more) are private initiatives, which is why the U.S.
based Life4Sofala Foundation has been created. If you would like to donate
individually or to partner in a corporate social responsibility program involving the
conservation of this valuable habitat, please speak to James White at Catapú and
contact Celesta von Chamier of the Life4Sofala Foundation
at info@life4sofala.org. Find out more on
www.life4sofala.org and facebook.com/life4sofala.
Community leader, Domingos Pungue
stated earlier this year “Our
community has benefited from the
joint projects with TCT Dalmann and
we wish to continue to work together
for a better tomorrow.”
