newspapers, etc., and one as a wholesale distributing point for the delivery of those
publications to homes and other businesses. In fact, one can still see the initials carved
into the back of the building by the paper boys waiting for the papers to be dropped off so
they could start their routes. (Later in the Esther Hornbeck era, the wholesale business was
discontinued.)
Another interesting anecdote about the early days at the store is one involving
a buzzer on the wall that was wired to a doorbell button inside the refrigerated locker at
Kaber Floral Company. This business was located next door and the buzzer was used to
summon help in the event a hapless floral shop worker should lock himself in the chiller!
Temple News Agency for many years had a soda fountain purchased from the
Rumely Hotel next door. Eventually, it became too expensive to maintain and it was sold,
but was replaced with the present one which dates from about 1948. There are two pieces
of store furniture still in use from the early days of “Temple.” They are the cash register
counter and the tobacco cabinet.
“Temple” was purchased by Michael Sitar in 1995. His is the 2nd longest period
of ownership in the business’s history.
By patronizing a business with a history as long as Temple News Agency’s, we
keep alive invaluable traditions of community and small town life that are fast disappearing
in the present day of massive chain stores and convenience stores.
