What Happened to the St Pauli Passengers www.lynly.gen.nz/index.htm
REMARKS
The ship St Pauli is a new & stout vessel, & her between decks are of ample height but the
owner refusing to allow scuttles to be cut so ventilation was not so good as could be desired.
Nothing whatsoever was found by the ship, but all erections & fittings, bedding, provisions,
water medical stores & attendance as also the depot at Hamburg were provided by the
promotion of the expedition.
The erection & fittings of berths, hospitals, cookhouse & were superior to the generality of
emigrant vessels - the berths only fore & aft & none to hold more than 3 adults some only 2
adults.-
The provisions were of the very best quality &a greater variety than is usual was provided.-
Shortly after leaving the Channel great complaints were eared by a few of the emigrants in
the first instance, instigated by the Missionaries of the insufficiently of the issue of food &
these complaints continued throughout the voyage varying only as to the articles of food- at
first they refused to eat bread, which was thrown overboard & complained of not having more
vegetables, and subsequently Peas, Soup & Barley were regularly thrown to the pigs &
complaints raised of an insufficiency of bread.
The captain who appeared disappointed in not having the management of the stores, kept up
the dissatisfaction & occasioned the entire subversion of all order & discipline.- At Bahia a
protest & survey were aired, from which it appears the complaints were groundless, & the
conduct of the Capt. is censured.-
The health of the emigrants has in general been very good, disease of a serious character
have been prevalent among during the voyage excepting the small pox the contusion of
which appears to have brought from Hamburg & terminated at Bahia.-
The condition & general appearance of the emigrants improved during the voyage & they
landed here in much more robust than when they embarked.-
On the whole the emigrants are a useful class of people, there are a few individuals of
indifferent character among them, but also some very deserving men, & it is to be that the
majority will become useful settlers.-
The Surgeon appears to be sufficiently skilful.
No salutary assistance in the superintendent of the emigrants was afford by the missionaries,
who are not regular German clergymen & have not graduated at the universities.-
