the little things
by renee sWope
Being faithful in the little things can be a challenge for me. Sometimes
I act a little like the third servant in the parable of the bags of
gold in Matthew 25. His master gave assignments according to each
servant’s abilities. The first two were given more to oversee. Perhaps
they had more experience or were better at multitasking. In any
case, both gave their time and talents to serve their master, and he
was pleased upon his return.
The third servant, who had been given less responsibility, made
excuses and neglected his assignment. I have to confess that I’ve
thought at times, “Oh, this little project isn’t much. Why worry
about being faithful with it?”
Sometimes I’ve seen my roles as a wife, daughter, mother and
friend as one-bag-of-gold assignments. Plenty of people have the
same assignments, I’ve thought. Without realizing it, I let myself
slip into being selfish, inconsiderate or impatient because it was just
a little thing.
Our Master has given us roles and responsibilities to oversee.
With each assignment comes a choice and a responsibility. With
each assignment comes the possibility of reward and the potential
of regret.
It isn’t a matter of how much or how little he’s given to us. What
matters is how faithful we are with what we’ve been given. No matter
how big or small our assignments seem, they are all God-given
and matter to him.
