NMRs take on <strong>the</strong>ir communal tasks beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g shortly<br />

after wean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue until death, without any apparent<br />

<strong>in</strong>terruption (RB, personal observation). Among <strong>the</strong>se tasks<br />

is <strong>the</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g of burrows. NMRs use <strong>the</strong>ir teeth <strong>and</strong> large<br />

jaw muscles as powerful chisels, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>in</strong>d limbs to<br />

brace <strong>the</strong>mselves while digg<strong>in</strong>g as well as to provide <strong>the</strong><br />

power for locomotion <strong>and</strong> backward thrusts while shift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

chamber contents. Studies of bone quality <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se rodents<br />

reveal little degeneration <strong>and</strong>, unlike mice, very effi cient<br />

bone remodel<strong>in</strong>g (Figure 1C-F) <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of cortical<br />

bone quality (P<strong>in</strong>to et al. 2010). This remodel<strong>in</strong>g allows<br />

older animals to carry out <strong>the</strong> same activities <strong>the</strong>y did <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

youth <strong>and</strong> may also contribute to susta<strong>in</strong>ed bone quality <strong>in</strong><br />

breed<strong>in</strong>g females that cont<strong>in</strong>ue to reproduce throughout <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

long lives despite <strong>the</strong> high m<strong>in</strong>eral dem<strong>and</strong>s of both pregnancy<br />

<strong>and</strong> lactation (26 years; Buffenste<strong>in</strong> 2008).<br />

Older <strong>in</strong>dividuals show a substantial decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> articular<br />

cartilage thickness of <strong>the</strong> femoral <strong>and</strong> tibial condyles <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> patella (Figure 1G,H). Surpris<strong>in</strong>gly, this decrease <strong>in</strong> cartilage<br />

thickness is not accompanied by signifi cant age-related<br />

changes <strong>in</strong> calcifi ed cartilage thickness, subchondral bone<br />

thickness, or chondrocyte number. The appearance of osteophytes<br />

(small bone protrusions), severe loss of cartilage, <strong>and</strong><br />

cell clon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> anterior region of <strong>the</strong> medial condyle of a<br />

26-year-old <strong>in</strong>dividual suggests that old animals may naturally<br />

be affl icted with osteoarthritis (Figure 1H; unpublished<br />

data, P<strong>in</strong>to, Jepsen, <strong>and</strong> Buffenste<strong>in</strong>). No <strong>in</strong>dications of osteoarthritis<br />

were evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger (
