4.5.–4.6. Evidence<br />

Breast cancer is a concern in <strong>transsexual</strong> women. A<br />

few cases <strong>of</strong> breast cancer in MTF <strong>transsexual</strong><br />

<strong>persons</strong> have been reported in the literature<br />

(123–125). In the Dutch cohort <strong>of</strong> 1800 <strong>transsexual</strong><br />

women followed for a mean <strong>of</strong> 15 years (range 1 to<br />

30 years), only one case <strong>of</strong> breast cancer was found.<br />

The Women’s Health Initiative study reported that<br />

women taking conjugated equine estrogen without<br />

progesterone for 7 years did not have an increased<br />

risk <strong>of</strong> breast cancer as compared with women taking<br />

placebo (126). Women with primary hypogonadism<br />

(XO) treated with estrogen replacement exhibited a<br />

significantly decreased incidence <strong>of</strong> breast cancer as<br />

compared with national standardized incidence<br />

ratios (127, 128). These studies suggest that estrogen<br />

therapy does not increase the risk <strong>of</strong> breast cancer in<br />

the short term (
