Jul 12 #2 "Campaigning for Statue <strong>of</strong> Sherlock" was <strong>the</strong> headline on a sto-<br />

ry in <strong>the</strong> Sussex Courier (July 6): Mike Tuffley wants to raise<br />

£50,000 for a statue <strong>of</strong> Sherlock Holmes to be erected in Crowborough; Tuff-<br />

ley believes that <strong>the</strong> statue will attract visitors <strong>from</strong> all over <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

and has created <strong>the</strong> Sherlock Holmes Trust Fund and is asking for donations<br />

(which can be made at any branch <strong>of</strong> Lloyds Bank).<br />

Karen Murdock discovered an amusing custom vinyl<br />

decal for Macbooks, laptops, car windows, or o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

flat non-porous surfaces; created by Benjamin Dan-<br />

iels for Perfectly Aligned Decals, it measures 8.0<br />

by 2.2 in. and costs $5.00; two more Sherlockian<br />

designs available, and many o<strong>the</strong>rs for non-Sher-<br />

lockians .<br />

Andy Griffith died on July 3. He was a musician,<br />

a monologuist, and <strong>the</strong>n an actor. He starred on Broadway in "No Time for<br />

Sergeants" in 1955, and acted in films and on television, starring as Andy<br />

Taylor <strong>of</strong> Mayberry on "The Andy Griffith Show" and as Ben Matlock on "Mat-<br />

lock"; in one episode <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Matlock series he said "I've always felt that<br />

<strong>the</strong> wrong Holmes is taught in law school; it ought to be Sherlock and not<br />

Oliver Wendell," and in ano<strong>the</strong>r episode he delivered a two-minute courtroom<br />

summation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plot <strong>of</strong> "The <strong>Red</strong>-Headed League".<br />

The parody <strong>of</strong> "The Hound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baskervilles" written by Steven Canny and<br />

John Nicholson in 2007 will be performed at <strong>the</strong> American Heartland Theatre,<br />

Jan. 11 through Feb. 13; 2450 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64108 (816-<br />

842-9999) .<br />

Vinnie Brosnan is in search <strong>of</strong> information<br />

on two busts, <strong>of</strong> Holmes and Watson; <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

4 in. high, marked on <strong>the</strong> bases as made in<br />

London, and numbered. Who was <strong>the</strong> artist,<br />

and when were <strong>the</strong>y sold, and by whom, and at<br />

what price? He's at <br />

Eric Sykes died on July 4. He began his entertainment career writing radio<br />

scripts, and went on to act and write on stage, screen, radio, and televis-<br />

ion, achieving renown both as a comic and character actor. He played Hor-<br />

ace Harker in Granada's "The Six Napoleons" (1986).<br />
