Model student deidre miller staff writer Michaela Bryce, a unique addition to Convent of the Sacred Heart's sophomore class, has been involved in modeling since she could barely walk. At age 15, Michaela is still pursuing this same interest and continues to model professionally. When Michaela was born, her mother, an avid artist and current lower school art instructor, was working at a photo studio along- side Barbara Campbell, a renowned children’s photographer. Michaela was first photographed as a baby at this studio and as she grew older she began to model for companies including Disney, Laura Ashley, Target, Lord & Taylor, The Children's Place, Saks Fifth Avenue, and F.A.O. Schwartz. Michaela left behind her modeling career at age four, however, because she wasn’t enjoying it. As Michaela grew older, her interest in modeling was rekindled and she began to get more serious about it. Currently, she models for Funny Face Today, or FFT, a modeling agency based in New York City. Michaela’s agents at Funny Face Today provide her with opportunities called “gosees” where she presents her portfolio to different companies in hopes of getting hired. Most recently, Michaela attended a request go-see for the cover of the latest novel in the Clique series. “Modelingopportunities come in waves,” said Michaela. “You’ll have five things one week, and then the next week will be dead. During crazy times it can get a little hectic and cut into school, so the modeling has to be worth it to you, because you’re the one who stays up the extra hours doing school work.” Once she has landed a modeling job, Michaela is then photographed at company photo shoots. “I love photo shoots,” said Michaela, “I find them really fun. Ready katie eisenberg lauren manning arts editor A few years ago, a digital camera was really the only thing I desperately wanted for Christmas. Ever since that day, with rechargeable batteries and an extra large memory card in tow, my camera and I have become inseparable. What is simply a small box of gray plastic with some extraordinary capabilities has become one of my favorite material possessions. On one day, not long ago, I took 253 pictures with my camera. From awkward candid photographs to the smiling faces of a group of friends, I made sure to have it all safely preserved on my trusty memory card, freezing the day’s memories forever. The words WARNING: LOW BATTERY LEVEL, which flash across the screen on some days, were, thankfully, nowhere to be seen this time. On this specific day, the occasion was yet another Sweet 16 party. For someone who has been to nearly ten such parties within two months, I would expect myself to have enough documentation. But no, this was a new event, a new location, a new group of friends, a new celebration. My little camera came out again to see it all. I found myself chatting with friends and devouring food, but then back in my newly found home, right behind the camera lens. To me the only thought was to preserve the memories. Five, ten, even thirty years into the future, I wanted to be able to remember the moments like these. I could not grasp the idea that another day with friends, when I felt my happiest, could ever be forgotten. A few hours passed and it was those two hundred plus photographs later. They were moments frozen in time that could not be forgotten except with an accidental push of the delete button. I thought this was what I wanted, but then I was not sure. I looked at the small screen of my little camera and realized that yes, I do have these pictures, but where are my personal memories? I had finite, physical proof of living this moment, but I had also missed so much. The conversation had drifted back and forth, but I could barely remember any of it. The laughter rang in my ears, but I could not recall what it was about. The click of the shutter and the flicker of the flash had cemented these moments, but I had missed them completely. This day transformed me from a camera-wielding teenager who snaps pictures at every possible moment, to one who truly appreciates the moments I have.
