Entry requirements<br />
Interest <strong>in</strong> The University <strong>of</strong> Auckland<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g (ECE, Primary<br />
and Secondary) is high. We strongly<br />
recommend that you submit your application<br />
for your chosen programme, <strong>in</strong> full, as early as<br />
possible and well before the application clos<strong>in</strong>g<br />
date. The faculty may choose not to <strong>in</strong>terview<br />
all applicants. See pg. 15 for application<br />
clos<strong>in</strong>g dates and details on the application<br />
process.<br />
Academic prerequisites<br />
The academic prerequisite for a <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
<strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g is an approved<br />
undergraduate degree or equivalent. Overseas<br />
qualifications need to be assessed by the<br />
University for equivalence with New Zealand<br />
degree qualifications.<br />
Additional prerequisites<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(Secondary): In addition to the above, each<br />
curriculum course has entry requirements. Your<br />
previous degree must l<strong>in</strong>k to secondary school<br />
subjects and the curriculum courses you<br />
choose to study must be aligned to your<br />
qualification. For example, you could elect to<br />
take science with a view to becom<strong>in</strong>g a science<br />
teacher if you already have a degree <strong>in</strong><br />
Science. If you have a degree <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts, you<br />
could elect to take art and/or art history.<br />
Contact the faculty if you are unsure what<br />
subjects you may be able to study and teach.<br />

Additional entry requirements for<br />
all applicants<br />
Referees’ reports (references), a literacy and<br />
numeracy assessment and an <strong>in</strong>terview are<br />
part <strong>of</strong> the selection process.<br />
Teach<strong>in</strong>g is a demand<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>ession. We need<br />
to make sure that you have thought seriously<br />
about the reasons you want to become a<br />
teacher and identify the strengths that you<br />
would br<strong>in</strong>g to teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
These qualities are assessed by your referees’<br />
reports, literacy and numeracy assessment and<br />
at an <strong>in</strong>terview.<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g selection criteria are used:<br />
• Written and spoken communication <strong>in</strong><br />
English. The teach<strong>in</strong>g environment places a<br />
high demand on accuracy and clarity <strong>of</strong><br />
communication <strong>in</strong> English.<br />
• If English or Mäori is not your first language<br />
then we require that you provide sufficient<br />
evidence <strong>of</strong> your competency <strong>in</strong> English<br />
(eg, IELTS test).<br />
• Personal qualities for your chosen area <strong>of</strong><br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

(NZTC) criteria<br />
To be admitted to this programme, students<br />
must demonstrate the potential to meet the<br />
New Zealand Teachers Council criteria for<br />
provisional registration. This <strong>in</strong>cludes language<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g (ECE) - flexi mode delivery<br />

The Teachers Council requires the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
declarations at registration time:<br />
Declaration <strong>of</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al convictions: The New<br />
Zealand Teachers Council requires all<br />
applicants for teach<strong>in</strong>g to consent to disclosure<br />
<strong>of</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al convictions. Our application form<br />
for teach<strong>in</strong>g programmes asks you to <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />
whether you have any crim<strong>in</strong>al convictions.<br />
Furthermore, before any applicant can be<br />
accepted <strong>in</strong>to this programme an <strong>of</strong>ficial police<br />
statement concern<strong>in</strong>g absence or otherwise <strong>of</strong><br />
crim<strong>in</strong>al convictions will be obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
Declaration <strong>of</strong> health conditions: The<br />
Teachers Council also requires all applicants<br />
for teach<strong>in</strong>g to declare whether they have a<br />
medical condition that may affect their fitness<br />
to be a teacher.<br />
