The Christmas Poems of Catherine Winkworth
Many of these poems, but not all, have had a musical setting created for them in the translation.
Those public domain settings that I have located have been published on my website The Hymns and
Carols of Christmas (http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com). Where a musical setting has posted
(as of the time of the creation of the collection), it is indicated by a note that follows the poem itself,
i.e. “See: Carol Name.”
In determining whether or not to include a hymn, and under what section of this compilation, I
have followed Ms. Winkworth's characterization, be it “Advent,” “Christmas,” “Epiphany,” etc., with
four exceptions, as noted in the text. I have attempted to transcribe the poems accurately, including Ms.
Winkworth's spelling and punctuation. Notes and scriptural citations that precede the poems are by Ms.
Winkworth.
In in all human endeavors, errors occur, and I am mindful of the advice of William Hone
(1823):
"... I am bound to confess the existence of a few errors, not affecting the sense, that were
discovered too late for correction, though in sufficient time to enable me to affirm, as a
warning to others, that the worst editor of an author's writings is himself."
