2.2 STRUCTURAL SHAPES<br />

A. Structural shapes shall be made from a premium grade iso-polyester or vinyl ester<br />

resin. All structural shapes shall contain a UV inhibitor.<br />

B. Manufactured by the pultrusion process<br />

Structural GRP members composition shall consist of a glass fibre rein<strong>for</strong>ced<br />

polyester or vinyl ester resin matrix, approximately 50% resin to glass ratio. A<br />

synthetic surface veil shall be the outermost layer covering the exterior surfaces.<br />

Continuous glass strand roving shall be used internally <strong>for</strong> longitudinal strength.<br />

Continuous strand glass mats shall be used internally <strong>for</strong> transverse strength.<br />

3. HAND RAILS FOR WALKWAYS<br />

3.1 SCOPE<br />

A. This specification covers the design, material requirements, fabrication and<br />

installation of fibreglass rein<strong>for</strong>ced plastic (GRP) hand rail.<br />

3.2 DESIGN CRITERIA<br />

A. The GRP hand rail is designed to meet the requirements (<strong>for</strong> heavy duty) of BS5395<br />

Part 3 (Code of Practice <strong>for</strong> the design of industrial type stairs, permanent ladders<br />

and walkways).<br />

B. The normal height of <strong>Formo</strong> pultruded hand rail (FPH) is 1100mm above floor level<br />

when horizontal and 900mm above pitch line on staircases with 45° angle. The<br />

intermediate rail is located at mid-height. Spacing of posts should not exceed 1.2 m.<br />

The rail can be terminated at a post, if the rail continues past a post it must not<br />

exceed 300mm.<br />
