communication and data routing to stay in contact. We are transitioning to a practice where
we use a single pervasive medical record. Instant communication, real-time validation,
multi-contributor documentation, and interdisciplinary plans of care have all compelled us
to collaborate.
Collaboration has grown outside of our own organizations and into our professional
practice with the formation of the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (www.allianceni.org)
and cross-organization initiatives. This is leading to knowledge sharing and consensus
building. This theme of collaboration has even carried forward into our professional
education opportunities and will be the concept behind the Nursing Informatics Symposium
at the next HIMSS2007 conference. Invited speakers are prepared to present on
collaboration across the care continuum, collaboration between clinical and IT departments,
clinical documentation collaboration, and collaboration with vendors and industry. The
symposium ends with multiple groups coming together with a multidisciplinary panel
presentation.
We should be encouraged by these sources of collaboration and look forward to
additional opportunities for ongoing partnerships. Interestingly enough, if you want to begin
today, you can go out to the Wiki and add your own piece of knowledge. The section on

providing readers with fundamental concepts and compelling language that we can
use in our professional lives to convey what we do in our nursing informatics roles.
I was particularly impressed by the content within Section II of this book.
While many texts on nursing informatics focus on the why and how of our
practice, this section takes direct focus on the where; that is, the range of practice
venues and contributions nurse informaticians are making in areas that support or
are supported by the range of informatics practice activities. Nurse executives
would be well-advised to include this book in their library. The editors should
consider, if they have not already done so, providing courtesy copies to key
members of the American Organization of Nurse Executives as well as presenting
selected topics at the annual meeting. Chief Nurse Executives at large healthcare
facilities or integrated delivery networks will likely possess a high level
conceptual understanding of much of this content, however, this book will provide
details and models to facilitate discussions with others in the C-suite. It will also
go far in educating those executives who have not had exposure to the value and
contributions of nursing informatics practice.
Section III focuses on the intersection of nursing education and information
technology. Much has been published in this area, but less has been published
from an international perspective. This sharing of perspectives and approaches to
common dilemmas within the educational framework is where this section excels.
Section IV is targeted to the intermediate to advanced levels and will help
readers advance their understanding of some of our current challenges. Chapter 22
in Section IV is particularly valuable to front line, operationally oriented nurse
informatics practitioners who are in the midst of systems analysis, design and
product selection for their organizations and who must attempt to explain the state
of the science and art of evidence-based healthcare in the context of information
systems to their executive leadership. Today’s executive
