from which quite good populati<strong>on</strong> data are available, while in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

countries rough estimati<strong>on</strong>s presently exist <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> this species. For <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

species quite good in<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> is available. Un<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>tunately, it c<strong>on</strong>firmed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

extincti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bearded Vulture in all Balkan Countries apart from Crete,<br />

where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> is in severe decline <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> its c<strong>on</strong>tinued existence <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

isl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> now seems highly unlikely. The Black Vulture finds itself in a similar<br />

positi<strong>on</strong>, as it is now extinct all over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Balkan area, except <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> small but<br />

stable col<strong>on</strong>y in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dadia Forest Reserve. Thanks to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intensive c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />

management programme <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WWF-Dadia, Black <str<strong>on</strong>g>Vultures</str<strong>on</strong>g> from this col<strong>on</strong>y are<br />

re-col<strong>on</strong>ising <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eastern Rhodope Mountains. Regarding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Griff<strong>on</strong> Vulture,<br />

some col<strong>on</strong>ies still exist in most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Balkan countries, although with very<br />

varying populati<strong>on</strong> trends. Whilst <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in Bulgaria <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Serbia <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> col<strong>on</strong>ies are<br />

slowly increasing, fluctuating or stable in Maced<strong>on</strong>ia (where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> north-west <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country is in need <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r survey) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> is in precipitous decline<br />

in Greece. The populati<strong>on</strong> trend <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Egyptian <str<strong>on</strong>g>Vultures</str<strong>on</strong>g> is generally negative in<br />

all countries, probably as breeding pairs are distributed all over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> countries<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> do not receive <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same protecti<strong>on</strong> as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> col<strong>on</strong>ially-breeding Griff<strong>on</strong><br />

Vulture. This species may face as yet undetermined threats in its wintering<br />

areas in Africa. It is anticipated that surveys in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Crimea may reveal<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al pairs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Black <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Griff<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Vultures</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

As a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> collaborative ef<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all participants, past <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> persisting<br />

threats to vultures could be identified <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaluated <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> most areas, necessary<br />

measures to mitigate prevailing threats have been identified, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

implementati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> priority acti<strong>on</strong>s has started.<br />

In general terms, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most severe threats at present are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> illegal use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pois<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, to a lesser degree, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural food. Both threats are<br />

difficult to eliminate <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> acti<strong>on</strong>s against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pois<strong>on</strong>s will be needed <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

many years. One particular soluti<strong>on</strong>, which addresses both threats, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pois<strong>on</strong>-free food at feeding stati<strong>on</strong>s. These sites can also be used<br />

to m<strong>on</strong>itor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vultures in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Balkan Peninsula. In future years an<br />

extensive network <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> feeding places may well be established in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Balkan<br />

countries until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural food base can be restored.<br />

Especially in reducing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> illegal use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pois<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural envir<strong>on</strong>ment,<br />

as many measures as possible have to be used simultaneously to ensure <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

survival <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vultures in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> affected areas or to prepare a suitable area <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

reintroducti<strong>on</strong>. The proposal to use a similar programme as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Antidote<br />

Programme in Spain, i.e. building a joint fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all local NGOs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

governments, was adopted in Maced<strong>on</strong>ia <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bulgaria, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> implementati<strong>on</strong><br />

started immediately. The lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> food resources has not been a major threat in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> western <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> central European vulture c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> projects, thus no<br />

measures can be learnt from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> projects underway in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se areas about how to<br />

address this factor. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following acti<strong>on</strong> can be undertaken: (1) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> restorati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> wild ungulates in mountainous<br />

habitats <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> (2) extensive farming <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> livestock. Several initiatives, especially in<br />

Bulgaria, to address <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> food shortage threat have been initiated.<br />
