Buon Natale: City of Vicenza Mayor Achille Variati during the Christmas tree lighting
ceremony in Piazza dei Signori Dec. 5. Several holiday events are planned throughout Vicenza. See
below for a listing.
Italian
holidays
Dec. 26 is an Italian national
holiday. It is the Feast of St.
Stephen (Santo Stefano), the first
Christian martyr.
Jan. 6 is another national
holiday in Italy, which celebrates
the visit of the Magi (The Wise
Men) to the infant Jesus. It’s also
known as “La Befana,” which is a
kind, ugly and old hunchback witch
with a crooked nose. She is dressed
in rags and travels straddling a
flying broomstick, carrying a selfreplenishing
sack full of presents
for children.
ending at Camp Marzio, the park
near the main train station.
The Euro 8 entrance fee includes
a lightweight Santa suit to run in
and hot chocolate and cake at the
finish. Individuals and groups of
all ages are welcome and there
is special recognition for the
agency or association with the
most participants. The course
is under two miles and may be
easily completed walking. Groups
may pre-register to receive their
costumes before race day, or
persons may sign-up and pay the
day of the event. All the money
raised goes to Italian charities. Call
