O<strong>the</strong>r useful identification tools<br />

As well <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> resources mentioned here, <strong>the</strong>re are many useful aids to identification<br />

published by <strong>the</strong> Botanical Society of <strong>the</strong> British Isles, <strong>the</strong> Wild Flower Society and<br />

<strong>the</strong> British Pteridological Society <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir journals and newletters.<br />

Rich and Rich, Plant Crib 1998, 2 nd edition, 1998.<br />

After Stace, <strong>the</strong> most useful identification tool to acquire, with lots of detail and h<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

on difficult taxa and hybrids, and how to observe <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Currently out of pr<strong>in</strong>t but second-hand copies (make sure you get <strong>the</strong> 1998 edition)<br />

sell for £15-£25. However, <strong>the</strong> good news is that large parts of it are available for free<br />

download from <strong>the</strong> BSBI web site (see below).<br />

Stace, van der Meijden & de Kort, Interactive Flora of <strong>the</strong> British Isles, 2004.<br />

If you have a computer with a DVD drive, and you don’t want to buy both <strong>the</strong> Stace<br />

Field Flora for out<strong>in</strong>gs and <strong>the</strong> New Flora for your bookshelf, here is a superior (and<br />

cheaper!) alternative: buy <strong>the</strong> Field Flora and this for less than <strong>the</strong> price of <strong>the</strong> New<br />

Flora.<br />

The Interactive Flora <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> complete text of <strong>the</strong> 2 nd edition of <strong>the</strong> New Flora,<br />

with a few revisions and additions. It also h<strong>as</strong> much more: <strong>in</strong>teractive keys, lots of<br />

colour photographs, l<strong>in</strong>e illustrations from <strong>the</strong> BSBI Handbooks and Hubbard’s<br />

Gr<strong>as</strong>ses, and a <strong>version</strong> of <strong>the</strong> New Atl<strong>as</strong> of <strong>the</strong> British Flora, giv<strong>in</strong>g distribution maps<br />

down to 10km resolution.<br />

At less than £26, this h<strong>as</strong> to be one of <strong>the</strong> botanical publish<strong>in</strong>g barga<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> century.<br />

BSBI Handbooks<br />

The BSBI publish a range of handbooks on some of <strong>the</strong> more challeng<strong>in</strong>g groups of<br />

plants, which <strong>in</strong>clude identification keys, very full species accounts and very detailed<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e illustrations. They sell new for £10-£17.50, and <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g titles.<br />
