If you would like to keep up to date with your local branch, or see what all the other branches are up to you can ‘like’ their page. Similarly, the main TMSA page is kept up to date with TMSA news and other articles of interest. You can also follow the TMSA on twitter @TMSAScotland. Honorary Degree For Patron TMSA patron Barbara Dickson OBE has been awarded yet another accolade, this time from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Barbara became Doctor of Music at the graduation ceremony on 3 July — congratulations Barbara! Aberdeen Branch Competitions Day in March Always a highlight of the year this is also a huge amount of work for the committee and members who help out to make the day run smoothly - but it's all worth it when you get a good turn out and everyone has such a good time. A new clarsach competition was introduced for the first time this year. It’s great to see this most traditional of instruments enjoying a revival and it proved to be a popular event. Overall the competitions day was a great success with enthusiastic involvement across the generations. Slow Tune Sessions and Group Singing Workshops Our slow tune session has been running bi-annually for the last few years now and has become an established event which gets a great turn out. It's encouraging that there are so many people learning to play instruments who are particularly interested in traditional tunes and this session gives everyone a chance to join in. This success is News From Aberdeen Branch The TMSA intends to organise another major fundraising raffle again this year, so if anyone is able to assist in providing prizes we would be very grateful. Notification will be going out to Branch Secretaries shortly. Anyone who feels they can contribute in any way please contact Alison Mackinnon at alison@cuillin1.co.uk Our last national raffle with some very attractive prizes on offer raised over £2,000 — money which is very helpful in keeping work such as the annual TMSA Event Calendar being produced. in no small measure a result of the efforts of Jimmy Mitchell who leads the tune sessions, organises the music and, perhaps most importantly of all, controls the speed. We have also started a group singing workshop along the same lines which is growing in popularity and encourages involvement from folk who often wouldn’t sing on their own. Irene Watt leads the song sessions using mostly Scots songs with opportunities for harmonies and simple arrangements. Garlogie Open Day The next event in our calendar is our Open Day at Garlogie on 24 th June. The purpose of the day is to encourage new people to come along and hear some traditional music and song but members are of course welcome. To this end the event is free and this year we have two fantastic guests in the form of Siobhan Miller and Paul McKenna. Throw in a bit of local talent and it’s bound to be a great day. Graham White
