wood en bridge. th e orig<strong>in</strong>al steel one was blown up by Johnnie Turk,<br />

the boys have temporarily erected a massive wooden structure. The river<br />

is r ush <strong>in</strong>g madly on, someth<strong>in</strong>g like 50 feet below, and one can hear<br />

the woodw ork creak<strong>in</strong>g as the tra<strong>in</strong> slowly rolls over, slower than<br />

walk <strong>in</strong>g pace. Thi s bridge, known as "Vancouver Bridge", denotes one's<br />

lowe st altitude <strong>in</strong> feet below sea level, for after this one beg<strong>in</strong>s<br />

climb<strong>in</strong>g on a ledge on the rocky hillside, keep<strong>in</strong>g about 30 feet above<br />

the rush<strong>in</strong>g ri ve r. The curves are simply tremendous and it is<br />

wonderful how a tra<strong>in</strong> can keep on rush<strong>in</strong>g a<strong>long</strong> without even a few feet<br />

of straight. Up we climb a<strong>long</strong>side the river with vertical sides of<br />

rock, until we notice on the hill the other side of the valley a<br />

climb<strong>in</strong>g ledge a<strong>long</strong> which we shall shortly be climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> exactly the<br />

reverse direction <strong>to</strong> that we are go<strong>in</strong>g now.<br />
