. To <strong>Mussoorie</strong>: The Present and the Past.<br />
• AMONG the attractions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mussoorie</strong> are its splendid climate,<br />
its freedom from landslips and other catastrophes, the remembrance<br />
<strong>of</strong> which, as regards other hill stations, makes many<br />
people taking a trip <strong>to</strong> the hills prefer <strong>to</strong> visit a place which<br />
has no dismal memories <strong>of</strong> death and disaster <strong>to</strong> daunt them^<br />
and which is never cut <strong>of</strong>! from communication With the<br />
plains, no matter how heavy the rainy season, as is occasionally<br />
the case with more pretentious places which give themselves<br />
airs on the score <strong>of</strong> viceregal residence or as the habitat<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lieutenant Governors or other lesser lights. Mussoorl^<br />
has many other attractions besides the foregoing. The Clubs— 1 '<br />
the Himalaya, and the Happy Valley, at the latter <strong>of</strong> which'<br />
the fine grounds for games <strong>of</strong> all sorts are a great attraction ;<br />
two fine large hotels and several smaller ones; numerous<br />
boarding houses <strong>of</strong> all sorts and sizes <strong>to</strong> suit all classes <strong>of</strong><br />
people and purses; a good race course and polo-ground;<br />
numerous first class shops ; a good water supply, and electric<br />
lighting; all these render <strong>Mussoorie</strong> most attractive <strong>to</strong> the<br />
visi<strong>to</strong>r. Naturally the number goes on increasing every year.<br />
<strong>Mussoorie</strong> is easy <strong>of</strong> access. In the past it was somewhat <strong>of</strong><br />
a journey <strong>to</strong> get at it ; but since tlie opening <strong>of</strong> the Dehra<br />
Dun Railway, a branch line from Lhaksar via Hard war <strong>to</strong><br />
Dehra Dun, which is worked, though not owned, by the Oudh<br />
and Rohilkhand State Railway, the journey <strong>to</strong> <strong>Mussoorie</strong> from 1 '<br />
any part <strong>of</strong> India has been an easy and comfortable one.<br />
