The first in a useful new series, A Pocket History of the British
Mandate in Palestine tells the story of a key episode in British
colonial history which has left lasting consequences for the whole
of the Middle East.
The book recounts the years after the First World War when
the Middle East was transformed by the participation of the
Great Powers, led by Britain. At the heart of the story is the fate
of Palestine, seen both as an Arab nation which was promised
independence and as a potential home for the Jews. In trying to
reconcile these two visions, the seeds were sown for one hundred
years of conflict.
Using photographs, maps and interviews with people who
remember British rule in Palestine, this book brings history to
life. It is the first in a series of short books presenting a concise
account of a particular period or event in world history. They will
be designed for the reader with a little knowledge of the topic but
with an interest in learning more.
Anne Lineen is a professional museum curator who is organizing
an exhibition on the British Mandate which will open in London in
autumn 2012.
