FEATURED SPEAKERS
PRESENTATION - MONDAY AFTERNOON
Canada's premier pollsters, Bricker and Wright, know what
Canadians are thinking, the changes that are taking place in
Canada, and what these trends mean for your organization.
With exclusive access to statistics from thousands of polls
across Canada and around the world, their presentations
are highly entertaining and packed with insight and cuttingedge
stats as current as a month to hours old.
Everything you ever wanted to know about what's going
on in the minds of Canadians (and what isn't) is available
through Darrell Bricker and John Wright. Whatever your
burning questions are, Bricker and Wright will bring the
statistics to life through experience, wit and humour.
When companies and organizations need a better grasp
on what the public is feeling, they turn to Darrell Bricker
and John Wright. How much are people willing to spend
for something? How often do they read the newspaper?
Do they go to church? What percentages of workers often
skip lunch, or eat at their desk in order to leave work on
time? As two of Canada’s top statistical analysts of leading
pollster Ipsos Reid, Bricker and Wright have the answers to
these questions, and many more.
Based on the statistics of 32 million Canadians, you
will learn why Canadians think the way they do, how it
will affect you, and what your organization should do to
capitalize on the opportunity. With data on virtually any
topic you can imagine, Bricker and Wright not only know
the statistics; they also break the numbers down, telling you
what the statistics mean. They’ve uncovered the reasons
people think and act the way they do, and will help you
figure out how it applies to your organization, right now.
Darrell Bricker and John Wright are national best-selling
authors of What Canadians Think: About Almost Everything,
and Canuckology: From Dollars to Donuts. Darrell Bricker
is CEO of Ipsos Global Public Affairs. Prior to joining Ipsos
Reid, Bricker was director of public-opinion research in
the office of the prime minister. John Wright is Senior
Vice President and Managing Director Public Opinion
Polling Division, Ipsos Public Affairs and Ipsos-Reid’s
spokesperson for more than a decade, and responsible for
Canada's leading monthly national opinion poll and analysis
FEATURED SPEAKERS
PLENARY SESSION - TUESDAY MORNING
Chris Catliff has been President & Chief Executive Officer of North
Shore Credit Union (NSCU) since 2000. NSCU is located in the sea
to sky area of Vancouver, British Columbia and has $2 billion in
on – book assets and $400 million in wealth management assets.
Prior to his employment at NSCU, Chris was employed in various
executive positions at Vancity Credit Union. He has served on several
boards including 10 years with the CUMIS Group and five years as chair.
Chris has been chair of United Mortgage Group, a mortgage broker
co-operative, since 2001. Since 2009, he has been a director of
Credential Financial and became chair in 2011.
Chris has served on the Operations Committee, The E-Commerce
Committee, the Card Committee and the Technology Committee of
Central 1. Other industry groups currently include the Filene Research
Council in Madison, Wisconsin and the Business Issues Committee and
Research Advisory Committee for Credit Union Central of Canada.
Chris believes passionately in the benefits of the credit union alternative
for financial services and has devoted himself to helping build better
credit unions, particularly through the effective use of technology, brand
and staff engagement.
Daniel Côté is Associate Professor at L’École des Hautes Études
Commerciales, Montréal, since 1983. He obtained his Ph.D from Louisiana
State University in 1985. At HEC, he has been involved with le Centre
de Gestion des Coopératives between 1977 and 2003. He has been the
director of this Centre from 1992 to 2003. He teaches mostly courses
on business strategy at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Professor Côté has conducted research on co-operatives for more
than 25 years. He worked on different co-operative sectors (mostly
agribusiness and finance) and on issues such as management, strategy
and entrepreneurship. His main concern has always been the management
of co-operatives in a competitive environment. His work focuses on the
development of a new co-operative paradigm. He develops the idea that
co-operative leaders have an incentive to strengthen their co-operative
identity since it is a source of competitive advantage. His new co-operative
paradigm is based on issues of loyalty, mobilization through values,
learning organization, meaning and legitimacy. His approach to research
is very much action based where fundamental ideas and concepts (such
as loyalty) are being implemented and tested in real life context with
existing co-operatives. He has published extensively on these issues.
He regularly gives conferences on co-operatives both in Canada and
internationally. He has been very involved in training managers and board
members of large co-operatives such as the Caisses Desjardins (financial
co-operatives) and the agricultural co-operatives. In 2004, he received
the ACE (Association of Co-operative Educators) award for Outstanding
Contribution to Co-operative Education and Training.
He is currently teaching a graduate course on co-operative management
for the Master of Management: Co-operatives and Credit Unions program
at St-Mary’s University (Canada). He was selected as Fellow of the Filene
Research Institute in October 2011.
Key Federal Policy Issues and Credit Union Positioning
What’s the federal policy agenda in 2012 for the Canadian credit
union system? Increasing compliance and regulatory burden,
the role of the Crown Corporations, Anti-Money Laundering and
the federal credit union charter to name but few, are significant
issues facing credit unions. Session panelists will review key
policy developments and initiatives underway to enhance the
competitive positioning of credit unions.
B
Strategy and Narrative: So, What's Your Credit Union's
Story?
“Story” is a leadership tool that can help your credit union
manage the complexity of the competitive landscape and
facilitate analysis and action. Session facilitators will help you
see how narrative structure – characters, roles, plot, storyline,
and the 'moral to the story' – offers a clean and rigorous
approach to strategic planning and they'll offer some tools to get
you started. This exciting and engaging workshop will help to
take your credit union's strategic planning to the next level.
C
Global Trends and Issues Impacting Financial Services
Institutions
Credit unions are firmly rooted in local communities, but
increasingly the impact of global issues in financial services
are being felt. This session will highlight issues such as:
innovation and new channel development for optimum customer
experience; the emphasis on data analytics and technology
solutions; shrinking margins and struggle for revenue generation,
and why these trends are important for Canadian credit unions
to understand.
D
Credit Union Young Leaders Front and Centre
The finalists of the National Credit Union Young Leaders Award
E
Up to Code: Credit Unions and Financial Stability
Do credit unions contribute to financial stability? Are they
positioned to meet Basel III capital requirements? Recent
research studies present some positive findings. This session will
review this research and suggest that this could be an important
point to make to policy makers as they continue to deal with the
aftermath of the financial crisis.

Linking Up: Connecting System Leaders
An important buzzword in business and associations today
is collaboration. Working together, sharing information and
maintaining contact through digital and virtual channels is
becoming the norm and businesses are finding it is also good for
business productivity and innovation. Creation of Communities of
Interest will engage credit union leaders in key system topics and
initiatives… fostering information sharing, collaboration and idea
generation at its best. Learn how your credit union can benefit at
this session.
G
IT Governance
At the Board level it is critical that there is the appropriate
understanding of both the benefits and the risks associated
with back office and member facing IT systems. Ensuring that
the risks have been identified and addressed and that the
appropriate IT governance is in place to proactively manage
these risks is a key Board responsibility.
H
The Canadian Mosaic Continues To Change
An update on diversity and reaching out to new groups that
are beginning to have an impact on Canadian society and the
consumer marketplace are important features of this workshop.
This session will provide an opportunity to delve into the
Canadian Mosaic in search of new members and employee
talent.
I
Defining A Leadership Development Strategy For Your
Credit Union
Leadership effectiveness is the key differentiating factor that
will determine the culture and performance of the overall
organization. Excellent leaders are more likely to make the right
decisions, attract and retain staff, and maximize the use of
resources. All of this increases the probability of success. Attend
this session and hear about best practices in developing leaders
and take away tips for developing a leadership development
strategy for your credit union.
Business Analytics: Top Line Growth and Bottom
Line Results
Leveraging business analytics can give you the instant
visibility you need to see results that deviate from your plan
and enable you to make ‘fact based’ adjustments to get
performance on track. Through illustrated scenarios, this
workshop will explore the opportunities available to credit
unions to employ business analytics to grow top line revenue
and enhance bottom line results.
K
Market Niches: Opportunity For Credit Unions?
Competition for new members is intensifying, especially as
the large banks refocus on their domestic operations. Session
facilitators will present findings from case studies into how credit
unions in Canada and the United States have reached out to four
niche markets. Also, session attendees will have the chance to
share their own experiences. Based on the case studies, takeaways
will be shared for credit unions interested in expanding
their membership through niche marketing.
L
The Expanding Scope of Board Accountability
Accountability is an area of ongoing change and expansion that
requires board members to be vigilant and up to date. Legislators
and regulators who must confront governance issues in boards
of all types are demanding higher levels of accountability –
particularly for customer due diligence. Session leaders will
review new Anti-Money Laundering rules, Foreign Account Tax
Compliance Act (FATCA), Privacy and much more.
M
It’s Time To Take Social Media Seriously
Social media is maturing as a marketing tool, offering new
opportunities for brand and relationship-building. Over the last
two years social media exploded onto the marketing scene. In
2012, it will evolve from experimental campaigns to social tactics
that are fully integrated into the overall marketing strategy.
Social media strategies are moving beyond the primary functions
of customer service and brand monitoring. Social media is an
integral channel for information gathering and a tool for decision
making. Has your credit union responded to this mandate?
Central’s grassroots advocacy program. But we’ll be up early to
Credit Union Issues Forum
A Celebration of Collaboration
At last year's Issues Forum we surfaced opportunities for
system-wide collaboration and over 100 participants expressed
their willingness to make things happen. As we well know,
it is action, not simply an expression of good intentions that
generates positive change! In this year's workshop we will hear
what progress has been achieved over the last year in a variety
of truly collaborative projects. We will celebrate progress,
explore the conditions that led to success, and identify how to
maintain momentum in continuing to strengthen the Canadian
Credit Union system for all of us. Join the celebration and
add your energy and enthusiasm to taking even bolder steps
together in the future!

Entertainment
Join your peers in recognizing the achievements of the
system’s outstanding individuals and credit unions over
the past year. We conclude the evening with Canada’s
own, Martin Dubé, internationally renowned impressionist
whose repertoire of over 400 celebrity voices will not only
entertain you but leave you astonished.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
Martin Dubé
Talented Singer, Impressionist &
Entertainer
This astoundingly talented singer/impressionist/entertainer is
over 400 voices packed into a one-man show. His remarkable
five-octave vocal range allows him the ability to capture a vast
selection of your favourite recording voices. From Louis Armstrong
to Celine Dion – no one is safe from Martin’s vocal grasp.
Martin’s live show is a journey through the world of music and
comedy. In fact, it is a symphony of music and comedy fused
into one package creating a Total Entertainment Experience!
His array of vocal impressions is unmatched and his talents not
only include original characters, but also his own soon-to-be
familiar single voice.
Martin’s live show is a journey through the world of music and
comedy, bringing together five decades of songs from rock & roll
to classical melodies. Truly offering something for everyone, his
show impressions of artists such as: Michael Jackson, Stevie
Wonder, Janis Joplin, Celine Dion, Elton John, Axl Rose, Bono,
Paul Anka, Tina Turner, Enrique Eglesias, Luciano Pavarotti and
many many more... Unlike most performers who rely on studioproduced
vocal enhancement and numerous takes to get their
sound, Martin replicates the original artist’s voice, notes for notes,
live in front of your eyes and ears!
